JOB DESCRIPTION
School Nutrition Assistant Part Time
Reports to:Cafeteria Manager
GENERAL FUNCTION& SCOPE
TheSchool Nutrition Assistant performs a variety of job functions essential to thesuccessful operation of the school cafeteria.Job functions include food production; meal service; food acceptability;customer service; sanitation, safety and security; receiving, storage andinventory; program regulations and accountability; equipment use and care; professionalexcellence. The School Nutrition Program provides an environment that supportshealthy food habits while maintaining program integrity and customersatisfaction.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONAL AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Food Production
- Prepares school breakfasts (where applicable), lunches andafternoon snacks
- Withdraws and prepares appropriate amounts of food frominventory each day, as directed by the Cafeteria Manager
- Adheres to standardized recipes
Meal Service
- Sets up the serving line each day, ensuring:
- all items on the menu are placed on the servingline in the proper order and at the proper temperature
- correct serving utensils are in place
- condiments and cutlery are provided
- Uses serving utensils correctly to ensurecorrect portions are served
- Serves students quickly and efficiently toadhere to the school’s meal schedules
Food Acceptability
- Prepares and serves meals of the highest qualitythat encourages student consumption
Customer Service
- Provides outstanding customer service tostudents, parents, staff, visitors and fellow employees
Sanitation, Safety & Security
- Follows all local health department requirementsfor food safety
- Monitors the temperatures of freezers,refrigerators and milk coolers daily, recording temperatures on the appropriatelog, and notifies Cafeteria Manager if temperatures are above 10˚F (freezer) or 41˚F (refrigerator/cooler)
- Takes and records temperature of foods to ensurethat foods are cooked to the proper internal temperature, chilled to theappropriate temperature, and placed on the serving line at the appropriatetemperature
- Performs general cleaning tasks and followscleaning schedule
- Follows the wash, rinse and sanitize proceduresfor ware washing
- Assists the Cafeteria Manager in ensuring the security of all food and supplies.
Receiving, Storage & Inventory
- Assists the Cafeteria Manager in receiving allincoming food and supply deliveries
- Stocks all incoming deliveries and adheres toestablished food storage procedures
- Assists the Cafeteria Manager in taking anaccurate monthly inventory of all purchased food and supplies
Program Regulations & Accountability
- Maintains integrity and accountability of theSchool Nutrition Program through compliance with all federal, state and localregulations
- Ensures students receive all required mealcomponents and that all meals served meet the reimbursable meal requirements
- Serves students all required meal components,ensuring students are served reimbursable mealsli>
- Assists Cafeteria Manager in maintaining allrecords and reports to meet local, state and USDA requirements, including dailyproduction records, temperature logs, etc.
- Follows all school policies and procedures
- Adheres to work schedule and scheduled hours
- Complies with school mission and vision
Equipment Use and Care
- Operates commercial kitchen equipment (convection oven, tiltskillet, steamer, multi-compartment sink, etc.) in a safe manner
- Follows policies for the use and care of all equipment
Professional Excellence
- Communicates effectively with supervisor,customers and other employees
Other
- Performs other duties as assigned by theCafeteria Manager
MINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS
- Some knowledge of volume feeding and routinekitchen duties involving food preparation and service
- Knowledge of general cooking, food storage andcleaning procedures
- Ability to perform assigned tasks
- Ability to follow instructions
- Ability to work harmoniously with fellowemployees
- Ability to provide friendly service to studentsand others
- Ability to learn cooking and other food serviceduties in a reasonable period of time
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATIONS
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Experience in kitchen, cafeteria or restaurantfoodservice (school cafeteria experience preferred)
- ServSafe certified preferred
