Job summary

Sumter School District is seeking a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) to join our health services team. The role focuses on school-based health screenings, student referrals, health record maintenance, and collaboration with parents and staff to meet student health needs.

The RN will provide clinical support, emergency care in the school setting, and help coordinate health services that align with district policies and state requirements. 190-day calendar applies.

Qualifications

• Valid state license as a Registered Nurse (RN).
• Two years of experience in public health nursing, preferably in a school district.
• Alternative qualifications may be considered by the Board.

Responsibilities

• Conduct hearing and vision screening tests and other tests required by the State Board of Education.
• Select and refer students needing medical and dental care.
• Report on school medical matters to parents, staff, physicians and clinics.
• Maintain up-to-date health records for all students.
• Observe students regularly to detect health needs.
• Provide care in the absence of a physician during emergencies.
• Communicate with homes for children referred for health reasons.
• Advise on modifying educational programs to meet health needs.
• Authorize exclusion/readmission of students for infectious diseases.
• Attend health service and curriculum committee meetings.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Valid state license as a Registered Nurse (RN). Two (2) years of experience in public health nursing, preferably in a school district. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

LOCATIONS:

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conducts hearing and vision screening tests and all other tests recommended by the State Board of Education and the Department of Health and Environmental Control.
• Assumes responsibility for selection and referral of students in need of medical and dental care.
• Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on school medical matters.
• Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students.
• Observe students on a regular basis to detect health needs.
• Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered injury or emergency illness.
• Contacts homes of children referred by principals for health reasons.
• Advises on modification of the educational program to meet health needs of individual students.
• Authorizes exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
• Attends committee meetings and conference regarding health service and health curriculum.
• Performs all other duties and responsibilities designated.

TERMS

190 days. Salary and work year to be recommended by the Superintendent and approved by the Board of Trustees.

EVALUATION

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation for professional personnel.
