Job summary

Cheshire Academy in Connecticut seeks a part-time school nurse for the 2026-2027 academic year, with a 12:00PM–4:00PM PM shift. This 10-month role includes rotating weekend coverage and on-call overnight shifts when on rotation, providing 24-hour coverage during the school year.

The nurse delivers primary and episodic care to boarding and day students, maintains health records, administers meds, coordinates care with providers, and supports immunization and health education efforts.

Qualifications

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in CT is required.
  • BLS certification is required.
  • Minimum 3 years nursing experience, preferably in a school setting, urgent care or ED.
  • Live within 20-30 minutes of Cheshire Academy.
  • Competent with electronic medical records and Microsoft Office suite.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates health emergencies and relays info to EMS and family.
  • Collaborates with off-campus providers for follow-up care.
  • Coordinates transportation for off-campus appointments.
  • Assists with International Health Insurance plans and vaccine clinics.

Cheshire Academy has an opening for a part-time school nurse for the PM shift (12:00PM to 4:00PM) for the 2026-2027 academic year.

  • This is a 10-month position
  • Rotating weekend coverage
  • On-call: two overnight on-call shifts weekday evenings (Monday - Thursday) and weekend overnight on-call when on rotating weekend coverage (Friday 5:00PM to Monday 8:00AM)
FUNCTION OF POSITION

Under the direction of the Director of the Richmond Health Center, will work with a team of health professionals, faculty, and student populations. The nurse provides primary and episodic health care for boarding and day students in an academic environment, and provides a pivotal role in the health maintenance, health education, and prevention and management of acute and chronic illnesses. The nurse provides this care by assessing and managing the physical, emotional, and social needs of the adolescent population to help students attain their optimal level of health and wellness. This role is part of a rotation that provides 24-hour call coverage during the school year.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provides primary, acute, and chronic nursing care for students, adhering to facility protocols and policies, standing orders and professional scope and standards.
  • Independently triages, evaluates and treats illness and injuries and refers to Medical Providers (APRN and School MD) when appropriate.
  • Develops and maintains current health care plans
  • Administers prescribed and over-the-counter medication in accordance with facility standing orders and medication policies. Conducts daily medication counts and documents all medication administration precisely in the electronic medical record.
  • Manages and coordinates medication refills, monitors for effectiveness of medication and safely stores all prescription (including controlled substances), international, and over-the-counter medications.
  • Documents all care in the electronic health record and properly maintains medical records and documentation
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding the health information of the students
  • Assures compliance with state mandates involving immunizations and physical examinations
  • Identifies and responds to campus health emergencies, calls 911 when appropriate, shares students emergency health information (consent, insurance and pertinent medical information) with Emergency Medical personnel and coordinates with the school Administrator on Duty regarding communication with employees and the student’s family.
  • Reports student excuses and absences for Health Center visits through computerized attendance program.
  • Coordinates medical and psychological services with off campus health care providers through scheduling, communication, and implementation of follow up care needed
  • Coordinates transportation for off-campus student medical appointments.
  • Assists in management of International Health Insurance plans
  • Assists in the planning and execution of a yearly influenza and Covid vaccine clinic in coordination with a local pharmacy.
  • Coordinates catch-up vaccinations at the Department of Public Health as needed
  • Provides health information, education and counseling for students, parents, and staff daily.
  • Performs, interprets, and processes urine screenings on students by request from the Community Life/Deans' Office and student health contracts. Sends to outside lab if indicated.
  • Provides first aid for employees and documentation of OSHA workman's compensation claims
  • Makes appropriate assessments and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporter
ON CALL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • When on call, responsible for answering the on-call phone for the duration of their shift and triaging student health concerns.
  • Makes determinations over the phone whether the student’s condition can be managed on campus by employees or requires further in-person evaluation by a healthcare professional
  • If in-person (non-urgent) care is warranted, the on-call nurse will be responsible for opening the health center to evaluate and treat the student.
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of CT required
  • BLS certification (minimum) required
  • Minimum of 3 years of nursing experience preferably in a school setting, urgent care or emergency room
  • Live within 20-30 minutes of Cheshire Academy
  • Competent with electronic medical records, Microsoft office suite products (outlook, word, excel, teams, one drive)
  • Models appropriate behavior and a positive attitude for students
