JOB DESCRIPTION: RN/SCHOOL NURSE
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current Connecticut RN Licensure
- Minimum of three (3) years work experience in the past five (5) years preferred
- Background in pediatric nursing, school nursing, or public health nursing preferred
- Twelve academic credits or the equivalent in CEUs or workshop hours beyond basic nursing preparation
- Ten hours of continuing education in school health every two (2) years
- Current CPR certification
The school nurse should have:
- Completed or be in the process of obtaining a baccalaureate degree, preferably in nursing or a related health field; OR
- Certification as a school nurse by a national certifying body (when eligible)

REPORTS TO: The school nurse is accountable to the school health supervisor for clinical practice.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under Section 20-87a(b) of the Connecticut General Statutes, the practice of nursing by a registered nurse includes diagnosing human responses to health problems, case finding and referral, collaborating in the implementation of health care, and executing medical regimens under a physician's or dentist's direction.
The school nurse, in cooperation with and consultation from medical advisors and school personnel, provides health care services to promote and protect students' health. As part of the school staff, the nurse contributes to planning, implementation, and evaluation of health programs, acts as a health advocate, and coordinates resources from home, school, and community. The nurse also ensures compliance with state laws, school policies, and procedures related to health services.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Apply appropriate nursing theory in decision making.
- Represent School Health Services and the Board of Education professionally and courteously.
- Implement and maintain a comprehensive school health program, including:
- Promoting effective communication between family and school regarding health and safety.
- Consulting with health supervisors and administrators to review policies.
- Training staff in medication administration and emergency procedures.
- Organizing in-service programs on health topics.
- Identifying students at risk and communicating health needs.
- Maintaining health records for each student.
- Following physician orders for medication and treatments.
- Developing and evaluating care plans for students with complex health needs.
- Documenting nursing care and student responses.
- Providing first aid and emergency services.
- Participating in multidisciplinary team processes and student teaching.
- Coordinating school physicals and screenings.
- Participating in student enrollment and health assessments.
- Referring students to social agencies and other services.
- Advocating for students' health and safety rights.
- Identifying and addressing environmental health and safety issues.
- Maintaining logs and reports.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
- Participate in staff meetings and committees.
- Attend continuing education activities.
- Maintain CPR certification.
- Engage in professional organization memberships and activities.
- Participate in practice evaluations and peer reviews.
Physical Abilities and Working Conditions:
- Physical demands include reaching, lifting, standing, walking, bending, sitting, and assisting with student lifts over 50 pounds.
- Exposure to weather conditions may occur.
