GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION - SCHOOL NURSE:
BASIC FUNCTION

The School Nurse plans and administers the health services program to support students to successfully complete instructional programs and classroom operations in compliance with guidelines and regulations determined by the administration, Board of Directors, state and federal agencies. He/She will assist the staff in creating an environment that encourages learning, and create a climate of health and well being needed to establish and continue a firm foundation to perpetuate the appropriate learning experience. The School Nurse will utilize all resources available to establish a cooperative relationship with parents, students, staff members and administrators to support each student’s opportunity to learn and grow in educational and life experiences.

The position of School Nurse is a 188 day position and shall include active participation in the school's operation to support a positive learning environment. This position reports to and is evaluated annually by the Building Principal and/or his/her designee.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

The requirements for this position are a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, Registered Nurse and appropriate Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) certification and qualifications prescribed by law, to include No Child Left Behind (NCLB).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The School Nurse will demonstrate proficiency with the WASD educational programs and state/federal health regulations to support student success. He/she will strengthen his/her abilities by reviewing innovative programs supported by best practice and research. The School Nurse will have the ability to assist students in recognizing the importance of making proper health related decisions and monitoring his/her overall physical, social and emotional health. He/She will assist students in developing positive and appropriate habits to maintain good health.

The School Nurse must be able to articulate the school and district goals regarding the healthcare programs to staff, students, parents and community members. He/She will have the ability to continuously monitor, review and recommend adjustments to healthcare services provided to students. The School Nurse must be aware of and comfortable using computer and technological applications as educational tools, to include utilizing e-mail, Microsoft Word, spreadsheet and curriculum based software.

AUTHORITY AND RESPONSIBILITIES: [(E) Designates Essential Functions]
  • Administration of the school health program, including (but not limited to) identification of students with health needs, scheduling physical examinations, monitoring immunizations and conducting mandated health screening. (E)
  • Works with students in developing strategies to successfully benefit from the health services provided and the development of positive life-long decisions to enhance and maintain good health. (E)
  • Instructs students in citizenship and advises on decision‑making techniques as specified in state laws, regulations and District policies.
  • Provide counseling and guidance services to students (as necessary) regarding health issues and identifies students in need of medical or dental care and recommend appropriate referrals as necessary. (E)
  • Selects, designs and organizes objectives, strategies and materials for health services and recommends appropriate modification to meet the health needs of individual students. (E)
  • Evaluates students’ health, emotional and social growth, keeps appropriate health records and maintains avenues of communication with students, parents, and staff members and utilizes appropriate school and community resources to support student progress. Prepares and provides reports as necessary. (E)
  • Uses data to improve health issues that support the learning and instruction process, social and personal development. (E)
  • Supports staff members in creating an effective healthy and safe learning environment and coordinates efforts to develop and implement a total school health program.
  • Directs and monitors the HRT (LPN) in the health office.
  • Observes students on a regular basis to identify health needs. (E)
  • Assumes authority in the absence of a physician for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered injury, illness or health emergency. (E)
  • Supervises students in out‑of‑classroom activities during the assigned work day. (E)
  • Authorize exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases and advises staff members on health matters regarding screening for health needs. (E)
  • Participates in faculty meetings, meetings and other faculty sponsored programs supporting the educational program and health services, and assists in establishing sanitary conditions and procedures.
  • Maintains professional competence through District sponsored in-service programs and approved professional development activities. (E)
  • Demonstrates regular and timely attendance. (E)
  • Is able to speak and write in a clear, concise manner. (E)
  • Is able to move throughout the building (all floors) and school grounds as necessary. (E)
  • Is able to lift a minimum of fifty (50) lbs. (E)
  • Collaborates and cooperates with other professional staff members and administrators in facilitating the delivery of the entire educational program and supporting social and health programs to students.
  • Follows all Board policies, building procedures and submits required information and reports written identified timelines and/or as necessary. (E)
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Building Principal, Director of Student Services, Superintendent, or his/her designee.
