Job Summary

The School Nurse - LPN/RN is responsible for promoting the health and well-being of all students and staff through assessment, intervention, education, and referrals. This role ensures that the school complies with health regulations and provides a safe and healthy environment conducive to learning.


Essential Job Functions

Communication & Collaboration


  • Communicates with parents/guardians regarding student health concerns or incidents and collaborates with school staff to promote student safety and wellness.
  • Reports significant health concerns to the lead RN or appropriate school personnel.

Community Engagement


  • Collaborate with parents, families, school board members, citizens, community organizations, and stakeholders. Participate in district and community-related health events, as needed.

Compliance & Reporting


  • Ensure the school complies with local, state, and federal regulations, prepare and submit required reports, and stay informed of education laws and policy changes.

Direct Student Care


  • Provides basic first aid and emergency care to students and staff; administers prescribed medications and treatments according to physician orders and district policies.
  • Monitors and assists students with chronic health conditions (e.g., diabetes, asthma, seizures) as directed by the supervising RN; recognizes signs and symptoms of illness and notify appropriate medical personnel or parents as needed.

Health Education & Prevention


  • Supports school-wide health screenings (e.g., vision, hearing) and immunization compliance.
  • Reinforces student education about hygiene, health practices, and managing their conditions; participates in health promotion activities under the direction of the school nurse or health services coordinator.

Health Monitoring & Documentation


  • Maintains accurate student health records and logs of clinic visits, treatments, and medication administration; documents all nursing activities in accordance with school district policies and applicable privacy laws (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA).
  • Assists in implementing individualized health care plans under supervision.

Student Support


  • Foster a safe and inclusive school environment, address student health issues, and coordinate resources with parents.

Other Duties

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of CDC and Virginia Department of Health (VDH) guidelines and recommendations.
  • Complies with all privacy laws including FERPA, HIPAA, state, etc.
  • Follows universal precautions and infection control procedures when coming into contact with body fluids, ensuring compliance with district health and safety guidelines.
  • Assists with lifting or transferring students safely, if needed, following proper ergonomic techniques and district guidelines to prevent injury to both the student and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Experience, and Education

  • Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in the state of Virginia. (REQUIRED)
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) (PREFERRED)
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience as a School Nurse or pediatric/community health nurse. (REQUIRED)
  • Current CPR/AED certification (REQUIRED)
  • Experience providing care to children or adolescents in a school, pediatric, or public health setting. (PREFERRED)
  • Experience in a school-based setting with exposure to typical childhood illnesses and potential biohazards. (PREFERRED)
  • Bilingual ability (depending on school community needs). (PREFERRED)

Computer and Equipment Skills

  • Advanced skills with Microsoft/Google Platform applications, which may include GMAIL, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and/or other web-based applications.
  • Use of the internet and online teleconferencing software (e.g., Zoom or Teams).
  • Ability to navigate web-based programs.
  • Familiarity with electronic health records and school health systems.
