Job summary

General Definition of Work

The EC department will employ their own school nurse, under general supervision, performs intermediate-level work with limited decision-making discretion performing a variety of health-related activities, providing medical treatment and evaluation to students, and communicating health information to parents, teachers and administrative staff. Employee performs school-based work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the Executive Director of Exceptional Children Services.

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

Essential Functions
  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Implement policies, practices, and procedures as established in the School Health Manual and the North Carolina Nurse Practice Act
  • Provide medical treatment as ordered by physicians, prepare and administer properly as prescribed by a physician
  • Develop Individual Health Plans (IHP) based on physician recommendation and documentation
  • Observe and document behavior and medication reaction; evaluate medical needs and recommend solutions
  • Perform, read and evaluate various medical tests including blood pressure tests and vision screenings
  • Administer first aid as needed
  • Maintain medical information and records on students
  • Maintain an adequate inventory of first aid and medical supplies
  • Consult with physicians and other health care professionals
  • Confer with parents and guardians related to student health needs and requirements
  • Provide on-call medical assistance and provide varied medical intervention; assist with special medical needs
  • Provide training to school staff regarding students with individual health needs, including emergency care and medication administration
  • Answer questions and provide general health information to the public; investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints
  • Perform related work as assigned or required
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, procedures, methods and techniques of school nursing
  • Comprehensive knowledge of public health laws and federal, state, and local regulatory requirements
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of uses and effects of various medicines
  • Knowledge of principles and procedures of medical record keeping
  • Skilled in nursing care and services including operating a variety of standard medical testing equipment and performing/interpreting various medical tests
  • Skilled in first aid, emergency medical care, and medication storage techniques
  • Skilled in communication, both verbal and written, including the ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to properly administer various medications
  • Ability to prepare medical records and reports
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships; work collaboratively within and across departments, external agencies, and the public
  • Ability to respond appropriately to situations while maintaining a professional and personable demeanor
  • Ability to use or learn specialized tools, equipment, or software
  • Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily business operations
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
Education and Experience
  • Be a registered nurse (under Article 9A of Chapter 90 of the NC General Statutes) with at least 2 years of experience as a nurse in a hospital or health clinic OR be certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the National Board for Certification of School Nurses (NBCSN) required
  • Bachelor’s degree and NBCSN preferred
  • Experience in pediatrics and/or public health nursing preferred
Special Requirements
  • Within 6 months of employment, must complete the School Nurse Orientation Modules offered by NC DHHS AND within 2 year of employment must complete the School Nurse Roles and Responsibilities offered by NC DHHS
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and ability to provide own transportation
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
