Description

The School Mental Health Specialist - District implements The Jed Foundation (JED)’s district programs, including stewarding district relationships and supporting districts in systems-wide school mental health transformation through a guided process of strategic assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Serving as the primary consultant and external face of JED for districts implementing JED’s PK-12 programming, this role collaborates with district leadership to improve their practices, procedures, and policies around mental health support and suicide prevention. The Jed Foundation’s Comprehensive Approach for Mental Health Promotion and Suicide Prevention for Districts provides trusted and evidence-based practice recommendations for districts to build and enhance their school mental health and suicide prevention systems.

The Jed Foundation seeks individuals with experience and expertise in building, leading, and implementing school mental health programs in the PK-12 sector, and with the ability to support district leaders in developing, growing, and sustaining school-linked mental health programming that supports student and staff well-being. The ideal candidate is an experienced school mental health leader with expertise in related systems, programs, and practices, and who is familiar with systems change processes. This role focuses on the needs of school districts in the mountain west region, serving as a consultant and advisor to district leaders partnering with JED. Key skills include relationship management, problem-solving, and resource development, along with providing guidance and technical assistance in school mental health.

This is a national, remote position. The School Mental Health Specialist - District should reside within Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Utah, or Wyoming, and be within approximately 60 minutes of an airport for regional and national travel. The role requires up to 40% travel to partner districts, conferences, and JED headquarters in NYC.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a portfolio of 15-20 districts, guiding them through JED’s PK-12 programs, emphasizing collaboration through consultation and coaching.
  • Provide direct technical assistance to districts on best practices in system-wide mental health practices, programming, and policies.
  • Analyze data to develop reports, strategic plans, and support resources, helping districts draw meaningful conclusions.
  • Lead the development of data-informed strategic plans to improve district practices around mental health and suicide prevention.
  • Support district communication planning to leverage community engagement.
  • Assist in creating mental health support activities, materials, and presentations for district professional development and community meetings.
  • Recommend evidence-based strategies to address district challenges during project execution.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to develop high-quality program materials.
Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Guide districts in completing assessment protocols, surveys, and data collection.
  • Lead ongoing evaluation of district progress and program effectiveness.
  • Update strategic plans with measurable progress and utilize Salesforce for tracking.
Project Management
  • Build and maintain relationships with district leaders to ensure successful engagement.
  • Monitor progress and oversee project timelines and milestones.
  • Assist districts with internal project management during implementation.
Content Expertise
  • Serve as a content expert on PK-12 policies, procedures, and practices related to JED’s core domains.
  • Act as an advisor and subject matter expert throughout program phases.
  • Maintain current knowledge of best practices for district systems.
  • Support content development for convenings, learning series, and activities.
  • Collaborate on updating assessment tools and program materials.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
  • Master’s level training in education, counseling, psychology, social work, or related field; LPC, MSW, MPH, MED, or early to mid-career PhD encouraged to apply.
  • At least 7 years of experience working with PK-12 education systems, especially in district leadership; experience with WY districts a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of school-based mental health, SEL, suicide prevention, and substance use prevention.
  • Deep understanding of school district systems and change processes.
  • Results-oriented with problem-solving skills and data analysis abilities.
  • Experience leading PK-12 programs and collaborating with district leaders.
  • Research and evaluation experience preferred.
Additional Qualifications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including report writing and presentations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience establishing partnerships.
  • Experience with Salesforce or similar CRM systems preferred.
  • Ability to travel up to 40% for district visits, conferences, and JED headquarters.
