Job description

Join to apply for the SCHOOL HEALTH ASST (2025-2026) role at Orange County Public Schools.

Salary Schedule

Under direct supervision, the purpose of the position is to perform school-based duties associated with the daily operation of the clinic. Employees in this classification function at an entry level capacity and perform basic first aid duties associated with treating sick or injured students. Performs related work as directed.

Examples Of Essential Functions
  • Responds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous and empathetic manner representing OCPS in a positive light.
  • Administers first aid for minor cuts and injuries and provides care for ill students (not chronic conditions).
  • Reviews immunization records for compliance and completes/reviews medical records in students’ cum folders.
  • Dispenses medication to students.
  • Conducts vision/hearing screenings as well as scoliosis screening.
  • Conducts follow-up on health screenings and referral to Learning Community-based RN as necessary.
  • Assists with blood sugar monitoring (diabetes)/inhalers (asthma)/Epi-pen administration (allergies).
  • Provides specialized care for chronically-ill/medically-fragile students as assigned by the Learning Community-based RN.
  • Inspects for head lice.
  • Administers CPR and other emergency procedures, as needed.
  • Recognizes and reports child abuse/neglect.
  • Notifies parents in case of medical emergencies or illness; fills out emergency forms; files forms for later retrieval.
  • Maintains medication forms to dispense medication to students; tracks amounts given; sends records to parents; prepares weekly and monthly reports.
  • Records number of students seen and purpose for clinic visitation; tracks number of students as well as statistical data relating to reasons for clinic visitation.
  • Implements knowledge of the Response to Intervention model in both academic and behavioral structures.
  • May perform general clerical duties, as needed.
  • Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job appropriate, being used by OCPS. Attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the required level.
  • Responsible for timely and accurate information maintenance as part of job responsibilities.

Minimum Training And Experience

High school diploma or GED; completion of OCPS Comprehensive Health Assistant training or equivalent related education, training, and experience as determined by the Medical Director. Training must be completed within thirty (30) days of entering the position.

  • Situational Reasoning: Exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in varied situations.
Physical and Environmental Requirements

Tasks involve light physical effort, some lifting or carrying (5-10 pounds), and extended periods at a workstation. Visual and oral communication skills are required. Tasks are performed in environments without adverse conditions.
