FUNCTION:

The primary function of the counselor is to assist with and be an active participant in the implementation of the guidance program and its evaluation.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working with Early Childhood school population.
  • Provide evidence that a criminal record history check has been conducted and clearance has been given by the Department of Education
  • An approved physical examinationand proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status required.
PERFORMANCE OF DUTIES:
  • To conduct orientation programs for all new pupils which provide for discussion of handbook, discipline, eligibility and attendance policies; building tour; and follow-up.
  • To fully implement individual and group counseling programs through planning of meetings, techniques to be followed, evaluation of effectiveness, and follow-up.
  • To assist pupils in understanding themselves and their potential through individual counseling, interpretation of tests, and review of the individual's record.
  • To participate in the administration of individual and group testing programs as directed by the department supervisor.
  • To provide current information to pupils in an organized career, college, scholarship, etc. guidance program by maintaining a current resource library, frequent publication of pertinent information, and personal awareness of resources.
  • To participate in pupil retention and promotion based upon district policies through a review of courses, graduation requirements, credits, and the submission of the necessary lists when requested with recommendations.
  • To participate in evaluation of pupil achievement through ongoing dialogue with all personnel involved in the educational progress of the student.
  • To participate in actively maintaining pupil records through a periodic review for accuracy and relevancy as indicated in Federal and State guidelines.
  • To assist students and parents of students with academic difficulties by setting up conferences, recommending tutors, or individual help from teachers.
  • To assist in pupil program and course selection through parent orientation sessions.
  • To act as a referral agent to the child study team by initiating referrals to the district team or providing a resource list for outside agencies if requested.
  • To satisfactorily complete the supervisory activities associated with the counseling position, such as monitoring between-class traffic, supervising lunchroom and library areas, conducting satisfactory fire drills, supervising assemblies and other student activities, and generally exercising control and leadership in the non-teaching areas within the counselor's day on an emergency basis as directed by the principal.
  • To demonstrate the concept of professional responsibility by presenting a neat appearance and proper decorum to the student body, by continually displaying a high standard of behavior in the school setting, by maintaining satisfactory habits of attendance and punctuality, and by interacting in a positive way with staff and students.
  • To provide for the individual differences of the students by planning and developing appropriate activities so that students can progress at a rate commensurate with their particular abilities.
  • To maintain official guidance records.
  • To monitor effective evaluations of student progress continuously by utilizing all criteria to accurately report pupil progress.
  • To maintain an ongoing and up-to-date awareness of recent trends in education and innovative methods of proven merit that may be incorporated into the curriculum.
  • To expedite the rules and regulations of the school, the district, and the State of New Jersey in regard to prescribed conduct for teachers, students, and other members of the school community.
  • To be responsible for the general condition of those physical areas under the direct jurisdiction of the counselor.
  • To be accountable, according to building procedures, for all those materials and supplies which are provided for the counselor's use to carry on the program.
  • To maintain a professional attitude in all professional relationships concerning school affairs, school regulations, school administration, as well as students and parents of the school community.
  • To further the cause of good human relations and human understanding by responding positively to the district programs aimed at improving these areas.
  • To be responsive to the student in his/her developmental process by being available, willing, and understanding when dealing with the problems of the individual, where feasible.
  • To participate in guidance activities including articulation and development of curriculum in order to provide a relevant and meaningful program.
  • To carry out explicitly the administrative directives of the school and the district in all matters pertaining to the school program.
  • To actively contribute to the planning and development of the discipline area and total curriculum by working cooperatively with the departmental team, principal, and director.
  • To actively engage in continual professional growth by participation in workshops, conferences, and in-service programs provided by the district that fall within the accepted practices of the negotiated contract.
  • Obtain homework assignments for absentee students as requested by parents.
  • Developing positive behavioral characteristics that lead by the highest form of human behavior – control of self and sensitivity toward others.
  • Avoiding sarcasm or reflecting negativity regarding the student, his/her family, or social background.
  • To carry out all additional duties and directives that are requested by the Special Services Director or principal which fall within the scope of staff responsibility, except if prohibited by the contract.
