Job summary

The Custodian position at Carthage Middle School, managed through Jefferson County Civil Service, is a 12-month role with hours 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Applicants must meet the JC Civil Service minimum qualifications and participate in the next custodian examination.

The job carries an hourly rate of $20.39 to $28.55, commensurate with experience, and includes duties such as cleaning floors, dusting, trash disposal, minor repairs, and groundskeeping as assigned.

Qualifications

• One year of experience in the maintenance or cleaning of buildings.
• Working knowledge of cleaning and disinfecting methods, materials, and equipment.
• Ability to lift heavy objects and perform work requiring bending, climbing, reaching, and repetitive motion.
• Willingness to perform routine cleaning and other physical tasks.
• Ability to follow simple oral and written directions.

Responsibilities

• Sweeps, mops, vacuums, and washes floors and stairs.
• Uses heavy mechanical equipment in stripping, waxing, and polishing floors; dusts chairs, tables, desks, and other furniture.
• Polishes furniture and brass.
• Empties wastebaskets and disposes of trash.
• Arranges chairs and tables and other equipment for special use of building; repairs window shades, replaces light bulbs, soap, and towels.
• Moves furniture, supplies, and other equipment.
• Cleans walls, bath fixtures, equipment, and furniture.
• May clear snow and ice from walks.
• Mows lawns, trim shrubs, rakes leaves, and performs groundskeeping tasks.
• May assist in operation and maintenance of heating system; washes windows, walls, blackboards, sinks, and other fixtures.
• Makes minor plumbing, carpentry, painting, and electrical repairs.
• Prepares and maintains simple records and reports.
