Job summary

Porter Township School Corporation is seeking a dedicated Custodian to protect and preserve district facilities. You will perform custodial duties, operate and monitor HVAC systems, and support safety and maintenance programs across school buildings.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, health clearances, and the ability to follow safety procedures. Applicants may have trade training and a pesticide license.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Post-secondary training in a trade desirable
• Meets health requirements (e.g., TB test)
• Criminal background clear for public school employment
• Complies with drug-free workplace rules
• Keeps current with technology and workplace innovations
• Skills/experience in boiler operations, preventive maintenance, basic repairs
• Knowledge of building systems (HVAC, fire suppression, security, communication)
• Ability to read MSDS
• Holds or can obtain pesticide application license

Responsibilities

• Performs custodial duties independently and takes initiative on routine tasks
• Keeps maintenance supervisor and head custodian informed of issues
• Upholds board policies and maintains professional image of the school corporation
• Promotes effective communication and assists with policy interpretations
• Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, washes, strips, and waxes floors
• Replenishes supplies and assists with deliveries and inventory
• Cleans, moves, and arranges furnishings and equipment
• Performs minor repairs and handles emergencies without disrupting operations
• Monitors HVAC equipment and assists with boiler prep and inspections
• Performs routine grounds keeping and snow removal as directed
• Performs preventive maintenance such as servicing equipment and changing filters
• Documents injuries and prepares reports as directed
• Picks up and delivers equipment and supplies
• Monitors building conditions and secures facilities at end of day
• Supports district security and assists visitors
• Reports safety issues and participates in safety training
• Maintains confidentiality and professional boundaries
• Reports suspected child abuse to authorities and participates in staff meetings
• Maintains professional appearance and appropriate work attire
