Job summary

LEARN Charter School Network seeks a Network English Language Arts Instructional Coach to lead, coordinate, and elevate ELA instruction across multiple campuses within the Chicago area. You will join the Teaching and Learning Team and report to the Managing Director of Academics.

You will drive the development and assessment of ELA programs, align with the network strategic plan, and provide professional development for leaders and teachers to advance rigorous ELA instruction and learner

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Teacher certification preferred (PEL-).
  • 3-5 years of high-level teaching or instructional coach experience.
  • Experience using the Science of Reading required.
  • K-8 teaching/coaching experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development, implementation, refinement, and assessment of all Network ELA programs.
  • Lead initiatives from the strategic plan to close achievement gaps and Covid learning loss.
  • Deliver professional development for leaders and teachers on ELA instruction and pedagogy.
  • Analyze student assessment data to drive continuous improvement.
  • Develop appropriate scaffolding for Tier 1 ELA instruction and small group interventions.

Founded in 2001, LEARN is a network of high-performing college preparatory, tuition-free public elementary and middle schools with the mission of providing children with the academic foundation and ambition to earn a college degree. There are 12 LEARN Schools serving 4,100 students in grades PK-8 across Chicago, Waukegan, North Chicago, and Washington, D.C.

What You'll Do:

The Network English Language Arts Instructional Coach organizes, integrates, and serves as key leaders for LEARN Charter School Network ELA programs of instruction for all students. The primary focus of this role will be to impact the English Language Arts instruction across the Network. The Network English Language Arts Instructional Coach reports to the Managing Director of Academics as a member of the Teaching and Learning Team. You will cover multiple campuses within the network.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Lead, in conjunction with the Teaching and Learning Team, the development, implementation, refinement, and assessment of all Network ELA programs.
  • Lead, in conjunction with Teaching and Learning Team initiatives from the strategic plan and our efforts to close the achievement gap and Covid learning loss.
  • Lead professional development for leaders and teachers on embedding best practices in leading ELA instruction, developing strong ELA learning tasks, and increasing teacher confidence in content and pedagogy.
  • Assist in the analysis of student assessment data for the purpose of continuous improvement for leaders and teachers
  • Assist leaders and teachers to develop appropriate scaffolding for tier one ELA instruction
  • Assist leaders and teachers to develop appropriate small group systems and interventions

Management:

  • Provide recommendations for additional ELA support. via curricula or web-based programs
  • Assist in grant applications and grant reporting
  • Building and managing effective relationships with internal and external partners
  • Maintains a presence in their region of campuses within the network

What You'll Need:

  • You have a bachelor’s degree, teacher certification (PEL- preferred)
  • You have a minimum of 3-5 years of high-level teaching (AP or above) or instructional coach experience (required)
  • Experience using the Science of Reading (required)
  • A version of K-8 education teaching/coaching experience (required)
  • You can demonstrate leadership and support of adult learners around improving rigorous English Language Arts instruction
  • Strong preference for candidates who have served as School Leaders and have a Reading/Language Arts endorsement
  • Ability to travel to multiple campuses throughout Chicagoland and North Chicago

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

Majority of work is performed in a general office and school environment. Position required availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours required to perform job duties. Also required participation and attendance at organization sponsored events and meetings. Nature of work required an ability to operate standard business office equipment. Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files. Physical demands require the ability to stand, bend, reach high and low, stoop, walk around the classroom and kneel. In addition, walking up and down stairs several times a day will often be necessary.
