Job summary

Akron Public Schools is seeking a 5-HR Custodial Worker for routine custodial and housekeeping duties. You will clean buildings daily, prepare facilities for the next school day, maintain grounds, and perform cleaning, maintenance, and safety tasks across school properties.

The role emphasizes safe handling of cleaning materials, interacting professionally with staff and students, and keeping accurate records of tasks and reports for supervision and compliance.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited High School or G.E.D.
• Ability to work effectively with others
• Ability to listen effectively, actively
• Knowledge of appropriate safety procedures
• Ability to read and understand verbal and written instructions, warnings and labels
• Knowledge of the care of materials, methods and practices essential to proper cleaning of a facility
• Ability to work independently
• Ability to communicate ideas clearly both orally and in writing
• Ability to problem solve
• Knowledge of how to clean up and disposal of blood borne pathogens

Responsibilities

• Ensure safety of students
• Assist in air handler and classroom filter changes
• Shovel and remove snow from school grounds and sidewalks
• Mow school lawns
• Maintain a clean and safe boiler room
• Sweep, vacuum, mop and wax floors
• Empty and clean waste receptacles and bathroom dispensers
• Remove cobwebs, clean windows and chalkboards
• Secure building at night
• Clean and maintain custodial equipment and materials
• Clean and sanitize restrooms
• Promote good safety practices
• Interact positively with staff, students and parents
• Organize, direct and participate in custodial maintenance
• Maintain records and complete reports
• Move heavy articles such as desks and files
• Polish furniture and surfaces
• Report damage and request repairs
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships
• Attend meetings and seminars
• Exercise care in use of cleaning materials
• Maintain confidential information
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors
