Job summary

St. Johns County Sheriff's Office seeks a seasonal School Crossing Guard to ensure the safety and education of school-aged children in designated crosswalks.

This part-time civilian position requires adherence to training, examinations, and on-site observations with children present. Responsibilities include identifying safe crossing moments, applying the eight-step safety approach, and directing children while crossing.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Valid Florida Driver’s License required.
• Basic computer knowledge expected.
• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel preferred.
• Complete yearly classroom training and pass written exam with ≥75%.
• Complete yearly practical/field training without children present.
• Complete yearly supervised onsite observations with children present.

Responsibilities

• Identify when it is safe to allow school-aged children to begin crossing the designated crosswalk.
• Utilize the eight step approach for crosswalk safety.
• Instruct school-aged children on proper safety techniques in crosswalks.
• Identify proper traffic gaps to safely cross school-aged children.
• Repeat crossing procedures during post assignments.
• Visually inspect school crossings and related signs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
