A local government is seeking a responsible individual to serve as a School Crossing Guard. In this part-time position, you will help ensure the safety of children crossing streets and waiting for buses. The role includes monitoring traffic, providing safety instructions, and requires effective communication skills. Uniforms and training are provided, and adherence to the school calendar is necessary.
If you are age 21 and older and looking for a worthwhile part-time job assisting elementary, middle and high school children with crossing the street and overseeing their safe conduct while waiting for and exiting school buses, then consider applying to be a School Crossing Guard.
Monitor traffic flow to identify potential hazards and ensure safe crossing conditions
Ensure children and other pedestrians are waiting safely away from the roadway
Use hand signals to stop and direct traffic to allow children and pedestrians to safely cross streets and load/unload buses
Communicate effectively with children,pedestrians, and motorists, providing safety instructions and directions
May observe and report suspicious vehicles or person, and report safety hazards to the police
Assists elementary, intermediate, and high school children withcrossing the street at designated intersections in a safe and orderly manner
Must position themselves in a highly visible and safe location and control traffic for the children’s safe crossing of streets and roads
Stand on the side of the street where the children approach if possible
The Guard, while at their assigned post, must remain in a position where they are easily observed by pedestrians seeking to cross the street and where they are able to observe anyone approaching the crosswalk.
Crossing Guards may, during extremely inclement weather, use their vehicle for shelter if necessary
The safety of the children under their control is paramount
Maintain regular and consistent attendance and punctuality
This part-time position follows the Bethel Park school calendar. Guards will receive training on traffic control and safety procedures.Regular and Alternate Guard positions are available. Uniforms, equipment and training are provided with sick leave and bereavement benefits.
Must be 21 years of age or older
Must be able to walk and stand for a minimum of 1 ½ hours in the morning and 1 ½ hours in the afternoon
Must have a working cell phone and valid email address
Must have access to reliable transportation and possess a valid PA Driver’s License

Flexible to work a modified schedule, shift, or assignment location
Schedules will occasionally vary to accommodate early dismissal days and school holidays
The Guard must remain on their post for the full shift to receive payment for a shift worked
