Job summary

Harford County Sheriff's Office is seeking crossing guards to ensure the safe passage of pedestrians at school crossings. You will stop traffic, place warning devices, and assist injured individuals when needed.

The role requires effective communication, teamwork, and calm under pressure. A high school diploma or GED is required, along with a valid driver’s license and clean record; background checks and polygraph are part of the process.

Qualifications

• Must possess a high school diploma or GED recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education.
• Valid driver’s license with no more than 3 points and a relatively clean record with no DUI convictions.
• Must pass comprehensive background investigation, medical exam, drug/alcohol screening, and polygraph exam.
• Handwriting sample review and successful Oral Interview Board evaluation required.

Responsibilities

• Stop vehicular traffic to allow safe pedestrian passage at designated school crossing locations.
• Place warning devices at traffic control points.
• Render basic first aid to injured persons as needed.
• Maintain orderly control of pedestrians at crossings.
• Report hazardous conditions at traffic control points.
• Attend meetings and required training programs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Description Summary:To provide for the safe passage of pedestrian traffic; to render aid and assistance, to ensure the smooth, safe movement of traffic; to provide advance warning to motorists of an intersection that is under the control of a crossing guard; perform other duties as assigned.There are permanent and on-call positions available. A permanent position starts at $20.67 per hour and is eligible for pension and medical benefits. An on-call position is paid $20.57 per hour and is not eligible for any benefits.Job Description:Essential Functions:Stop vehicular traffic to allow for safe pedestrian passage at designated school crossing locations.Place warning devices at traffic control points.Render basic first aid to injured persons as needed.Maintain orderly control of pedestrians at crossings.Report hazardous conditions at traffic control points.Attend meetings and required training programs.Perform other duties as assigned.Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Ability to act as a representative of the Sheriff’s Office to the public.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff; successfully communicate with other staff members and members of the public and work as a team.Ability to respond properly in emergency situations and complete assignments under pressure.Ability to communicate effectively; to read, write and speak in a clear, articulate manner.Ability to utilize the senses of sight, hearing, smell and feel to recognize conditions of danger and other factors.Ability to adapt to changes in working conditions such as inclement weather, heavy pedestrian or traffic flows or last minute schedule changes.Ability to stand for extended periods of time under all conditions while maintaining mental alertness.Ability to use tact and resourcefulness in coping with varied problems and situations.Ability to interact effectively and responsibly with persons of cultural, ethnic, religious and economic backgrounds.Ability to work unsupervised.Knowledge of uniform traffic control hand signals, basic first aid, pedestrian control techniques and Sheriff’s Office rules and regulations.Selected Candidate:Must possess a high school diploma or GED certificate recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education.Must have a valid driver's license with no more than 3 points and a relatively clean record with no convictions for DUI.Must pass comprehensive background investigation and criminal record check; medical exam and drug/alcohol screening; polygraph exam.Must provide handwriting sample for review.Must appear before and receive favorable recommendation from Oral Interview Board.Must possess a history and exhibit the characteristics of honesty, reliability, integrity and interpersonal skills.
