Job summary

University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy is seeking an outstanding full-time School Counselor to work primarily with academy students (grades 7-8) and support high school students as needed. The counselor will promote a developmentally appropriate guidance program focusing on academic success and social growth, aligned with Jesuit values and the school's mission.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Social Work, or related field.
  • Valid school counseling license/certification (e.g., Michigan Teaching Certificate with a Guidance Counselor Endorsement).
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in a middle or high school setting.
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with students, parents, faculty, and staff.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal abilities; strong collaboration skills.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional discretion.
  • Experience with student support plans, behavioral interventions, and crisis response.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and student information systems.
  • Strong skills in counseling techniques, group facilitation, and crisis management.
  • Commitment to student success and wellbeing.
  • Willingness to complete background checks/fingerprinting.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with students predominantly in the academy on a regular basis to monitor personal, social, and academic development.
  • Establish harmonious relationships with students, teachers, and parents to encourage open discussions of concerns.
  • Advocate for students by facilitating articulation of their thoughts to parents, teachers, and peers.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Principal for the Jesuit Academy on course selection.
  • Refer students of concern to the Assistant Principal for the Jesuit when needed.
  • Refer students of concern for assessment or treatment and follow up with outside specialists.

Job Summary:University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy is seeking an outstanding full-time School Counselor. This position will predominantly work with Academy students (grades 7-8) while also supporting high school students as needed/required. Candidates should desire to provide all students with equitable access to a quality and developmentally appropriate and comprehensive guidance counseling program that focuses on academic success and social development.

A school counselor at U of D Jesuit is part of a team of counselors, faculty, staff, and parents who help each student become self- actualized, confident in his own goodness and inner processes. School counselors are required to develop a healthy integration between self and self-concept, and grow mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and socially. As the primary counselor for the Jesuit Academy, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to follow the Jesuit/Ignatian mandate of creating methods that will assist in forming students into persons who seek justice with the focus of forming men for others.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience:
  • Master’s degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Social Work, or related field

Areas of Concentration:
A. Individual and Group Counseling
  • Meet with students (predominantly academy) on a regular basis to monitor their personal, social, and academic development.
  • Work to establish harmonious relationships with students, teachers, and parents so that they will feel free to bring their problems for discussion.
  • Advocate for students – assisting and facilitating the articulation of their thoughts to parents, teachers, administrators and peers.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Principal for the Jesuit Academy in course selection
  • When needed, refer students of concern to Assistant Principal for the Jesuit
  • When needed, refer students of concern for assessment or treatment or both; follow-up with outside specialists/programs; update the administration team.
B. Meeting and Speaking with Parents in the Role of Student Advocate
  • Initiating contact with parents/guardians surrounding concerns and problem behavior of students.
  • Assessing social/emotional issues with parents/guardians.
  • Meeting and speaking with parents/guardians surrounding their expressed concerns about their
  • Providing clarity and reasoning for student behavior at the middle school stage in
C. Behavior Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM):
  • Serve as a member of the school’s multidisciplinary Behavior Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) Team by identifying, assessing, and responding to students exhibiting concerning behaviors.
  • Collaborate with administrators, faculty/staff, families, and community partners to develop intervention, support, and safety plans using a prevention-focused, trauma-informed and student-centered approach.
D. Instruction/Teaching Courses
  • 7th grade elective – Graduate at Graduation (Grad at Grad) – Support
  • 8th grade elective – Directed Study – Support
E. Academic Support
  • Conduct after school study sessions to provide academic assistance to students experiencing academic challenges
  • Participate in classroom observations of recommended students
  • Review school approved accommodations
F. Testing
  • Coordinate and administer NWEA/MAP and HSPT Testing
  • Interpret test results for students, parents, and teachers.
  • Analyze test score results to form insights as to the existence of academic deficiency and/or learning disabilities.
  • Administer and record recommended accommodations
G. Coordinate/Administer Programs
  • Participate in, coordinate, and conduct activities that contribute to the effective operation of the school in support of the school’s core purpose and values.

H. Collaborating with Director of School Counseling
  • Attend regular faculty meetings with the Counseling Department Chair and other
  • Works with Counseling Department Chair to plan, interpret, evaluate, and when necessary, revise the counseling program to meet the needs of the entire school.
I. Administrative
  • Maintain records on individual students by documenting counseling sessions and other relevant interactions with teachers, parents, and guardians.
  • Maintain and manage school records received from former grade schools
  • Develop middle school based academic support programs and tools geared towards improving student achievement in the core subjects (English, Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies).
  • Complete the school counselor self-evaluation at the end of the academic
J. Professional Development
  • Maintain licensing and additional credentials
  • Pursue continuous professional growth in school counseling
  • Attend selected JSN seminars and workshops
  • Attend faculty meetings and retreats
Physical Working Conditions:

Must be able to lift light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (10 to 20 pounds).
