Job summary

United Stand in Chicago is seeking a School Counselor to support students' social, emotional, and academic development within partner schools. You will provide individual and group counseling, assess needs, and develop plans to address emotional and behavioral concerns.

Collaborating with teachers, administrators, caregivers, and families, you will coordinate interventions, monitor progress, and connect students to resources while contributing to school-wide mental health and equity initiatives.

Qualifications

United Stand focuses on helping students build resilience and skills so they can grow into adults who positively impact their communities. Through school-based counseling, therapeutic interventions, academic support, and family engagement, United Stand provides stability, healing, and hope for students experiencing emotional, behavioral, and environmental challenges.

Role Description

The School Counselor is a full-time, on-site role based in Chicago, IL, working within partner schools to support students’ social, emotional, and academic development. Day-to-day responsibilities include providing individual and group counseling, conducting assessments, and creating plans to address students’ emotional and behavioral needs. The School Counselor collaborates with teachers, administrators, and caregivers to coordinate interventions, monitor progress, and connect students and families with appropriate resources. The role also involves crisis response, documentation of services, participation in school meetings, and contribution to school-wide initiatives that promote mental health, equity, and positive school climate.

Qualifications
  • Demonstrated skills in Student Counseling and Counseling for children and adolescents.
  • Knowledge and experience in Career Counseling to support students’ academic and vocational planning.
  • Background in Psychology and Mental Health, with the ability to apply evidence-informed practices in school settings.
  • Relevant master’s degree (e.g., School Counseling, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology) and appropriate state licensure or eligibility for licensure.
  • Experience working with trauma-exposed or underserved youth in urban school environments.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and advocacy skills with students, families, and school staff.
  • Ability to maintain accurate documentation, manage caseloads, and adhere to ethical and confidentiality standards.
  • Cultural humility and commitment to equity, inclusion, and non-discriminatory practices.
