Job summary

Parkway School District is seeking a School Bus Mechanic (2nd Shift) to diagnose, repair and maintain buses in the Transportation Building. This year-round, non-exempt role runs 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., with an open date of 9/10/2026 and closing date of 9/17/2026.

Starting pay is $25.67 per hour, with compensation depending on verifiable experience. Essential duties include diagnostics, preventive maintenance, minor body work, and supporting annual inspections while ensuring safety and

Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses vehicle malfunctions and determines needed repairs or replacements.
  • Inspects vehicles to ensure safe operating condition.
  • Performs routine maintenance such as oil changes and tire rotations.
  • Repairs vehicle systems and components to keep buses in service.
  • Responds to road calls and safety concerns for emergency repairs.
  • Maintains shop area, tools and equipment for safety and readiness.

Location: Transportation Building
Position: Year-round; 8 Hours; 2nd shift
Status: Non-Exempt, 11
Hours: 11:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Essential Functions
  • Diagnoses vehicle malfunctions for the purpose of determining needed vehicle repairs and/or replacements.
  • Fabricates parts for the purpose of providing items necessary for repairs.
  • Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations for the purpose of providing assistance and resolving or recommending a resolution to the situation.
  • Cleans assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior for the purpose of maintaining appearance, sanitation, and safety of vehicle.
  • Communicates with drivers and other departmental staff (e.g. diagnosing problems, reporting issues, responding to inquiries, safety issues, etc.) for the purpose of providing up-to-date information.
  • Fuels assigned vehicle (e.g. oil, water, fuel, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining vehicle in a safe operating condition.
  • Inspects assigned vehicles (e.g. brake system, oil levels, coolant, tire pressure, wiper blades, fan belts, exterior and interior condition, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the vehicle is in a safe operating condition.
  • Installs and/or maintains a variety of items (e.g. radios, cameras, lifts, etc.) for the purpose of providing enhancements and/or upgrades.
  • Maintains tools, equipment, and/or shop area for the purpose of ensuring the availability of tools and equipment, and safety within the workspace.
  • Participates in department in-service and safety meetings for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
  • Performs minor body work (e.g. front ends, fenders, upholstery, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the appearance and safe operation of the vehicles.
  • Performs routine vehicle maintenance program (e.g. oil change, tire rotation, break check, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining vehicles in a safe operating condition and meeting mandated requirements.
  • Prepares written materials (e.g. repair and maintenance logs, parts lists, warranty claims, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and meeting mandated requirements.
  • Provides assistance with annual inspections and inventory (e.g. safety inspections, State Highway Patrol inspection, parts inventory counting, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of required items and documenting annual utilization.
  • Repairs vehicle systems and components (e.g. diesel/gasoline engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition.
  • Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. snow/ice removal, spreading road salt, facility damage, vandalism, etc.) for the purpose of determining and implementing appropriate actions required to resolve situation.
  • Responds to road calls regarding disabled vehicles for the purpose of delivering spare buses and/or performing emergency repair work in the field.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Experience: Job-related experience within specialized field is required.
Education: Targeted, job-related education that meets organization's prerequisite requirements.
Clearances: Criminal Background Check required.
