The position emphasizes safety, regular CDL recertification, and reliable operation of large school buses. A valid school bus endorsement and clean driving record are essential for consideration.

Qualifications

• Must hold a valid commercial driver's license with a school bus endorsement.
• Must meet physical qualifications for a school bus physical, with or without waivers.
• Must have a clean motor vehicle record, criminal history, and child abuse history.
• Ability to safely operate large commercial vehicles.
• Ability to read English and understand traffic signs, maps, and route schedules.
• Must complete skills and classroom recertification training as required.
• Ability to manage student behavior in a non-confrontational manner.
• Ability to manage vehicle and student emergencies calmly.

Responsibilities

• Comply with all applicable federal and state regulations for operating school buses.
• Safely operate a school bus on a routed schedule with courtesy and professionalism.
• Conduct vehicle inspections and report any mechanical defects.
• Maintain and read route sheets, noting time changes.
• Keep to the established route timings and mileage; inform supervisor of changes.
• Supervise student passengers and report discipline issues per district procedures.
• Assist with special needs transportation per guidelines.
• Report accidents/incidents to supervisor and follow procedures.
• Report injuries and follow workers’ compensation procedures.
• Maintain confidentiality of student information.
• Maintain valid license with school bus endorsement and medical certification.
• Complete required paperwork accurately and timely.
• Attend in-service training and safety meetings.
• Complete recertification requirements timely.
• Keep the vehicle clean and fueled per standards.
• Operate vehicle communications systems per policy.
• Report personal vehicle violations per DOT rules.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
