Qualifications

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license at the appropriate level

• Special requirement: meet NY State Commissioner of Education rules for School Bus Driver

Responsibilities

• Operate a school bus on a regular schedule or for special trips and events
• Conduct pre-trip inspections
• Report defects to supervisor promptly
• Instruct students on safety regulations and practices
• Maintain orderly student conduct on the bus
• Keep bus interior and exterior clean and neat
• Maintain mileage, routes, times, and incidents records
• Prepare and update route maps and pick-up points
• Perform minor maintenance tasks such as fueling and oil checks
• Dispatch pupil transportation vehicles as needed
• Train candidates in obtaining CDL permits and licenses
• Support district transportation operations as needed

Position Overview

The Goshen Central School District is seeking responsible, safety-focused individuals to serve as School Bus Drivers. This position involves driving a school bus on an assigned route and may include minor vehicle maintenance duties. Drivers play a vital role in ensuring students arrive safely and on time while fostering a positive and respectful environment on the bus.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Head Bus Driver or Supervisor of Transportation, following established policies and procedures. Drivers are expected to exercise independent judgment in carrying out daily responsibilities and perform related duties as required.

Typical Work Activities

• Operate a school bus on a regular schedule or for special trips and events
• Conduct pre-trip inspections to ensure safe operating condition
• Report operational defects to supervisor promptly
• Instruct students on safety regulations and practices
• Maintain orderly student conduct on the bus
• Keep the interior and exterior of the bus clean and neat
• Maintain records of mileage, routes, times, and incidents
• Prepare and update route maps and pick-up points
• Perform minor maintenance tasks (e.g., fueling, oil checks, tire changes, placing chains on wheels)
• Dispatch pupil transportation vehicles as needed
• Train school bus driver candidates in obtaining CDL permits and licenses
• Support district transportation operations as needed

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Good knowledge of driving safety practices and traffic laws
• Ability to operate a bus under difficult driving or hazardous conditions
• Ability to perform minor mechanical repairs
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to manage student behavior respectfully
• Mechanical aptitude and mental alertness
• Dependability and sound judgment
• Physical condition appropriate to the demands of the role

Minimum Qualifications

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license at the appropriate level (as determined by appointing authority)
• Must be at least 21 years of age

Special Requirement

Candidates must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver as set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education, as determined by review and approval of the appointing authority.
