Job Description: School Bus Driver

Operates a school bus on a regular schedule or on special occasions. Checks the operating conditions of the bus before starting a trip and reports any operational defects to the immediate supervisor. Informs children about safety practices and maintains orderly conduct on the bus. Keeps the interior and exterior of the vehicle clean and neat. Maintains records of mileage, routes, times, and incidents. Prepares and maintains maps of routes and pick-up points. Assists handicapped students with boarding, alighting, and seating when necessary.

Qualifications

1. Good knowledge of driving safety practices, traffic laws, and regulations.
2. Ability to operate a bus under difficult driving and road conditions.
3. Ability to make minor repairs to the vehicle.
4. Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions.
5. Ability to get along well with children and command their respect.
6. Mechanical aptitude, mental alertness, dependability.
7. Physical condition suitable for the demands of the position.
8. Eligibility for the appropriate level New York State Driver’s License at the time of application, with possession required at the time of appointment and maintained throughout employment.
9. Drivers must be at least 21 years of age.
10. Must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education.
