Job summary

Sunrise Transportation in Stratford, CT is seeking a School Bus Aide to help students board and ride safely, monitor passenger welfare, and assist with loading and unloading on daily routes.

You will cooperate with drivers, school personnel and parents, attend safety trainings, and respond calmly to on-bus situations. Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Know route and monitor welfare of passengers on the route.
• Communicate behavior issues and stop conditions with the driver.
• Assist students in loading and unloading.
• Cooperate with school personnel, students, and parents.
• Attend safety and training meetings as required.
• Assist in emergency evacuation from the bus, including use of the emergency door.
• Help keep the inside of the bus clean.
• Assist driver in safely directing the vehicle backwards.
• Help students board and exit safely, including those using wheelchairs.
• Secure wheelchairs, safety harnesses, and other equipment.
• Ensure that students are safely loaded and unloaded at school and home.

School Bus Aide Responsibilities

• Knows the route and remains alert to monitor the welfare of passengers while on the route
• Communicates behavior problems and conditions of various stops with the driver
• Assists students in the loading and unloading process
• Cooperates and communicates with school personnel, students, and parents
• Attends all safety and training meetings when required
• Conducts emergency evacuation from the bus, including use of the emergency door
• Assists in cleaning the inside of the bus
• Assists driver when necessary to safely direct the vehicle backwards

School Bus Aide Required Experience and Skills

• At least 18 years old
• Good verbal communication skills
• Attention to detail
• Early morning availability
• Judgement/problem solving skills

Must Be Able To

• Sit for extended periods of time
• Consistently monitor and view multiple students on the bus at all times, ensuring their safety and well‑being
• Observe students for signs of distress, discomfort, or unsafe behavior during transit
• Lift, push, pull, and carry tools, objects, or equipment above shoulder level without assistance
• Move up and down stairs easily
• Reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping

Passenger Assistance

• Help students board and exit the bus safely, including those using wheelchairs or mobility devices
• Secure wheelchairs, safety harnesses, and other equipment properly to ensure safe transportation
• Ensure that students are safely loaded and unloaded at school and home, with particular attention to students needing assistance with mobility or other special accommodations
