Background and Overview

The Boston Public Schools is committed to providing every child in every classroom an equitable, high-quality education with access to resources that unlock their potential. The Office of Social Work supports students and families by providing high-quality, culturally responsive services, supporting social workers district-wide with consultation, professional development, and crisis response. All social workers receive support from a District Social Worker and the Program Director of Social Work. The goal is to deliver high-quality mental health support that is culturally and linguistically relevant.

Position Summary and Responsibilities

Boston Public Schools seeks an exceptional School-Based Social Worker to support behavioral health initiatives, trauma response, healing, and resiliency-focused services to help students achieve their full potential academically, socially, and emotionally. The social worker will collaborate with school staff, external mental health partners, students, and families to:

  • Provide individual and group counseling and assessments
  • Manage crisis intervention and response
  • Coordinate referrals to external agencies
  • Support students and families directly

In partnership with the Student Success Team and other school-based teams, the social worker will:

  • Facilitate data collection and trend analysis to inform support strategies
  • Support the development of culturally responsive practices and relationships
  • Participate in professional development and receive ongoing coaching
Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include participating in the Student Success Team, supporting tiered interventions, attending professional development, providing direct services such as counseling and crisis intervention, and maintaining data and reports. The social worker will also engage in continuous professional growth and collaboration to improve service delivery.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Master's Degree in Social Work or Counseling
  • MA DESE School Social Worker/School Adjustment Counselor License (All Levels)
  • Licensed Social Worker (LCSW or LICSW) or Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), or eligibility
  • At least 3 years of effective experience in an urban setting
  • Ability to meet district standards of effective practice
  • Strong interpersonal skills and cultural humility
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.

Preferred:

  • Prior school-based social work experience
  • Knowledge of Special Education policies
  • Fluency in BPS official languages (Spanish, Creole, Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Somali)
  • Certification in Safety Cares de-escalation and restraint
