Job summary

Baltimore City Public Schools is seeking a highly qualified School Nurse to promote student health and educational success through direct care, assessment, and coordination of health services.

The role includes developing individualized healthcare plans, leading health education initiatives, maintaining medical records, and coordinating annual screenings. An MD RN license and pediatric experience are required along with a valid driver's license.

Qualifications

  • An ADN or higher nursing degree; RN license in Maryland in good standing.
  • At least one year of clinical experience in pediatric or tertiary care settings.
  • Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license and be legally eligible to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic healthcare to students for injuries or acute illness.
  • Develop and implement Individualized Healthcare Plans for students with chronic illnesses.
  • Coordinate state mandated vision/hearing screenings and track immunizations.
  • Maintain comprehensive clinical records and confidentiality.
  • Counsel students, parents, teachers, and administrators on health issues and referrals.
  • Train staff on emergency care and management of chronic conditions.

Job description

The school nurse fulfills multiple roles which serve to promote student health and educational success including; providing direct care and assessments to students and populations, providing leadership for the provision of health services and programmatic coordination on the local, regional and state level, providing/coordinating screening and referral for health conditions, promoting a healthy school environment, promoting/providing health education, referral and advocacy, serving in leadership roles for health policies and programs, being a member of the multidisciplinary educational team, being a liaison between school personnel, family, health care professionals, and the community, and a case manager to chronically ill students including delegation of care needs and health services delivery oversight.

Essential Functions
  • Provide basic healthcare to students in the case of injury or acute illness.
  • Development and implementation of Individualized Healthcare Plans for students with chronic illnesses and/or medical disabilities.
  • Complete nursing appraisal for all student with chronic illnesses and/or medical disabilities.
  • Development and promotion of health education programs for the school community.
  • Maintain all clinical records.
  • Coordination of state mandated, annual vision and hearing screenings for assigned school(s).
  • Counsel students, parents, teachers, and school administrators regarding health problems, providing information and/or referrals to community resources.
  • Development of plans and procedures, as well as training of staff for emergency management of illnesses and injuries within the school community.
  • Monitor and track student immunization compliance.
  • Train and monitor the Licensed Practical Nurse and unlicensed school staff in administering routine and emergency medications to students with chronic health conditions.
  • Serve as a member of a multidisciplinary student support team, providing health counsel in the development and implementation of both Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and Section 504b Plans for students with chronic health conditions.
  • Serve as a member of the student wellness support team, providing input regarding to mental wellness and case management.
  • Knowledge of child development and common childhood health conditions.
  • Skill in administration, analysis, and interpretation of various assessment measures.
  • Ability to work with minimal on-site supervision and adapt to multiple settings.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to interact well with students, families, school personnel, as well as other community stakeholders.
  • Ability to provide age and functionally appropriate instruction to students in the care of their chronic medical condition.
  • Proficient in the use of computer systems, such as Microsoft Office. EHR experience preferred.
  • Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and non-discrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board policies and the professional standards.

Desired Qualifications
  • An Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), Bachelors preferred, from an accredited institution.
  • A valid license as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Maryland, in good standing with the board.
  • At least one year of clinical experience in a tertiary care setting, pediatric care preferred.
  • Must possess a valid U.S. driver's license.
  • Must be legally allowed to work in the U.S.
