Overview

The Cushing/Whitney Medical Library seeks a Scholarly Communication Librarian to support students, faculty, staff, and clinicians at the Yale Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health, as well as the Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS). The librarian serves as the primary point of contact for scholarly communication and provides consultations, instruction, and outreach on topics including scholarly publishing, compliance with funder public access mandates, publishing ethics, research impact assessment, and emerging trends in scholarly communication.

The librarian collaborates with colleagues across the Medical Library and the Yale Library system to advance shared scholarly communication initiatives. The position reports to the Program Director for Collection Strategy and Scholarly Communication.

The budgeted range for this position is $70-82K.

Required Skills and Abilities

3. An understanding of current trends, challenges, and best practices in the scholarly communication ecosystem.

4. Experience providing instruction, consultations, or outreach services in an academic or health sciences setting.

5. Familiarity with bibliometrics, citation analysis, altmetrics, and tools used to assess and demonstrate scholarly impact.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Provides consultations, instruction, and outreach on a wide range of scholarly communication topics to Yale medical campus affiliates.
2. Guides researchers in journal selection; open access publishing options (including green, gold, and diamond models); the use of Yale-supported publishing agreements and repositories (e.g., APC waivers and EliScholar); and compliance with public access requirements from major funders, including the NIH and NSF.
3. Assists researchers in evaluating journals and conferences, identifying predatory or deceptive publishing practices, and interpreting indicators of editorial quality and integrity.
4. Promotes the adoption of persistent identifiers and advises on scholarly identity management, including ORCID and researcher profiles like Google Scholar.
5. Provides support and guidance on the responsible use of bibliometrics, citation metrics, and alternative metrics to demonstrate research impact for promotion, funding, and reporting purposes.
6. Collaborates with the Scholarly Communication and Collection Strategy team on Yale Library-wide scholarly communication initiatives by participating in committees, working groups, and collaborative projects.
7. Collaborates with CWML librarians whose work intersects with scholarly communication, including partnering to create and maintain web content and supporting data sharing, transparency, and reproducibility practices; collaborate with other librarians to deliver integrated research and instructional support.
8. Participates in the Medical Library’s Scholarly Communications and Open Access Special Interest Group.
9. Under the direction of the Program Director for Collection Strategy and Scholarly Communication, assesses medical campus publishing activity to evaluate existing open access agreements and support the review, negotiation, and development of new transformative and other open access publishing agreements relevant to the medical campus community.
10. Provides backup support to CWML collection development activities, as needed.
11. Demonstrates ongoing professional development and service through publication and/or active membership in professional organizations.
12. May be required to assist with disaster recovery efforts.
13. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

1. Master’s degree from an ALA‑accredited library school. In selected instances, a graduate degree in a related discipline may be substituted for a master’s degree in library science.

2. Minimum of 2 years of experience working in an academic or health science library.

3. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

4. Demonstrated ability to work both independently or collaboratively in a diverse team environment, and to effectively build partnerships and promote the library.
