Job description

Location: San Antonio, TX (must be local)

Dates: August - November

Position Summary:

The Scenic Painter has an expert understanding of scenic finishing techniques, either scenic painting or flame retardant treatments, to foam carving, texturing, etc.

Essential Duties:

  • Make sure that everything is treated with flame retardant
  • Align with the RWS Design Department to make sure that scenery is finished in such a way that aligns with the overall aesthetic vision

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION:

Required: High School Diploma or GED

Preferred: Vocational or technical training – Field of Study: scenery, design, painting.

EXPERIENCE:

2 years of experience in the technical entertainment field.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Valid driver’s license required. OSHA and similar construction safety certification(s) helpful.

Key Competencies:

  • Basic knowledge of a working theatrical space - fly systems, rigging, rehearsal schedules, facility requirements, hanging/focusing lighting instruments, audio, running cabling, cable management, basic knots, awareness of other aspects of production and their needs from your position and from the space, basic carpentry, basic electrics, ability to interpret and create construction drawings, design drawings, light plots, ground plans, basic paperwork
  • Expert knowledge of paint and application methods
  • Solutions-based troubleshooting
  • Friendly and proactive personality
  • Ability to interface with clients, coworkers, and laborers to maintain a positive work environment
  • Organizational skills – on-site
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and customer service - communicates through various mediums. such as email, text, phone call, and in-person conversations
  • Awareness of dangers and hazards associated with job functions and willingness to mitigate those risks
  • Expert troubleshooting of technical issues in a theatrical/production setting
  • Experience leading and managing a team

Work Environment: While on-site, frequent exposure to unfavorable conditions such as all-weather, or working in cramped, very dirty, or unpleasant quarters. Because of the time constraints of most of the department’s projects, the Head Electrics, Audio & Effects will often be on-site and need to work in hot/humid, cold/freezing, rain, and snow conditions to complete the job before the deadline.

Physical Effort: Moderate – Physical effort represented by occasional handling of heavy objects (approx. 25-

50lbs.) and materials, or heavy hand tools.

Hazards:

Frequent existing or potential hazards. Moderate existing or potential hazards. In office, there is very little exposure to hazards. While on-site, there is regular exposure to: working at heights over 50 feet, working in and around heavy equipment, exposure to chemicals.

Salary:

$250/day
