Taylor Studios is an exhibit design and fabrication firm producing exhibits and experiences within museums, nature centers, libraries, visitor centers, universities, and all sorts of other facilities across the country. We teach content through interpretation and storytelling, and daily strive to inspire others through our designs.

We are seeking a talented and experienced scenic artist. Qualified candidates must have experience/knowledge of general and complex sculpting, theming, model making, build methods, materials, and components, the ability to read and interpret shop and architectural drawings, be proficient in the use of hand and power tools, and demonstrate the ability to problem solve. The ability to work well with others in a team environment, be comfortable using technology, and work effectively under time constraints is required.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Exercise knowledge of handling both water-based and solvent systems appropriately
  • Efficient in preparing various substrates for work
  • Exercise knowledge in utilizing diverse spray tools
  • Ensure swift completion of exhibit production tasks
  • Craft impeccable faux finishes
  • Utilize foundational color theory principles and demonstrate proficiency in color mixing
  • Exhibit proactiveness within the workshop environment
  • Uphold cleanliness and efficiency in the workspace to facilitate safety
  • Consistently produce high-quality work that meets client specifications.
  • Execute hyper realistic results when necessary on animal models and or exhibit surfaces
  • Execute stylistic results when necessary on models and or exhibit surfaces
  • Sculpt by traditional methods using foam, clay, and other materials
  • Utilize knowledge of making molds and mold making materials required
  • Choose appropriate materials and methods for each project
  • Theme exhibit walls and display surfaces
  • Read and comprehend construction drawings
  • Operate, maintain, and clean various power and manual equipment and tools aiding in the completion of build tasks
  • Communicate effectively with other departments to complete tasks in an efficient and organized manner
  • Facilitate, contribute to, and guide the careful, safe, and effective construction, installation, and maintenance of exhibit components. Maintain the safety and cleanliness of all model areas. Enforce safe work habits in the model shop
  • Carry out other relevant tasks as required

Requirements:

  • High school diploma
  • 3 years of experience in scenic/themed environments is desired but not absolutely required
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience sculpting and painting models large and small
  • Ability to work overtime, nights, and weekends (when necessary) to deliver projects on deadline
  • Ability to travel to installation sites within the United States by car or airplane, for up to two weeks at a time
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Effective communication skills both verbal and written
  • Ability to follow directions and adhere to quality building standards
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Good understanding of basic math
  • Basic building skills required
Bonus Skills
  • Experience using multiple building materials
  • Familiarity with power tools such as: table saw, band saw, planer, nail guns, miter saw, track saw, and other basic building equipment
  • Experience using spray equipment and ability to recommend best materials to use for various applications needed
  • Experience with MIG welding
  • Ability to sculpt 3D in digital format
