Job description

SCADA Engineer – Automation Department Location: Plano, TX Employment Type: Full-Time Work Arrangement: Onsite Travel: Up to 20% to service centers and customer sites Position Overview: Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking an experienced SCADA Engineer to join our client's Automation Department in Plano, Texas. This position will focus primarily on the development, configuration, maintenance, and optimization of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems supporting industrial automation and customer operations. Approximately 90% of this role will be dedicated to SCADA development and maintenance, making this an excellent opportunity for an engineer who specializes in SCADA platforms rather than general electrical or controls engineering. The ideal candidate will have extensive hands‑on experience with Wonderware OMI (Operations Management Interface) and AVEVA/Wonderware System Platform, including the ability to independently design, configure, and deploy complete SCADA projects from the ground up. This is not simply a SCADA monitoring or support position. We are looking for someone who can take ownership of SCADA projects throughout their lifecycle, from initial architecture and system configuration through implementation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and ongoing maintenance. The position requires up to 20% travel to company service centers and customer sites for system implementation, troubleshooting, commissioning, and technical support.

Key Responsibilities
  • SCADA Development, Configuration & Maintenance - Primary Focus: Design, develop, configure, implement, and maintain SCADA systems supporting industrial automation applications.
  • Independently build complete SCADA projects from scratch, including system architecture, application configuration, graphics, communications, and deployment.
  • Develop and maintain SCADA applications using Wonderware OMI and AVEVA/Wonderware System Platform.
  • Configure and maintain System Platform components, including application objects, templates, graphics, and associated system functionality.
  • Develop and modify HMI/SCADA visualization screens, operator interfaces, alarms, trends, and system dashboards.
  • Configure SCADA communications and data exchange with PLCs, industrial equipment, and associated control systems.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and enhance existing SCADA applications to improve system performance, reliability, and usability.
  • Identify and resolve SCADA software, communications, integration, and network connectivity issues.
  • Perform system updates, modifications, testing, and validation to support changing operational requirements.
  • Maintain SCADA application documentation, configurations, and engineering records.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives involving SCADA functionality, standardization, and system performance.
  • Work independently to diagnose complex technical issues and develop effective solutions.
Automation & Controls Integration
  • Integrate SCADA applications with PLCs, industrial instrumentation, and automated equipment.
  • Support communications between SCADA platforms and industrial control systems.
  • Troubleshoot PLC-to-SCADA connectivity, data mapping, and communication issues.
  • Review control strategies, P&IDs, electrical schematics, and automation documentation to support SCADA development.
  • Collaborate with Automation Engineers, Electrical Engineers, and other technical personnel to ensure successful system integration.
  • Provide support for PLC programming and configuration when required.
  • Assist with the development of control system specifications and technical documentation.
Project Development & Execution
  • Participate in SCADA project planning, design reviews, and technical discussions.
  • Translate customer and operational requirements into functional SCADA applications.
  • Develop SCADA configurations and supporting documentation based on project specifications.
  • Manage assigned SCADA development activities to meet project schedules and deliverables.
  • Support system testing, commissioning, and implementation.
  • Maintain accurate engineering documentation and records for future system modifications and troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and customers throughout the project lifecycle.
Field Support & Customer Integration
  • Travel to company service centers and customer facilities as needed, up to approximately 20%.
  • Support onsite SCADA installation, system integration, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
  • Diagnose and resolve SCADA and controls communication issues at customer locations.
  • Provide technical assistance and training to operators, service personnel, and customer teams.
  • Support system startup, validation, and ongoing operational improvements.
  • Work directly with customers and internal technical teams to resolve system performance concerns.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in electrical, automation, controls, or industrial SCADA systems within a production, manufacturing, or engineering environment.
  • Hands-on experience with Wonderware OMI (Operations Management Interface).
  • Hands-on experience with AVEVA/Wonderware System Platform.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently develop and deploy SCADA projects from the ground up.
  • Strong experience developing, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting industrial SCADA applications.
  • Experience creating and modifying HMI graphics, operator interfaces, alarms, trends, and system configurations.
  • Understanding of SCADA architecture, industrial automation systems, and PLC integration.
  • Experience troubleshooting communication issues between SCADA systems, PLCs, and industrial equipment.
  • Working knowledge of industrial communication networks and control system integration.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage technical responsibilities independently while collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 20% to service centers and customer locations.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without employer-sponsored immigration assistance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation Engineering, Industrial Automation, or a related technical discipline.
  • Advanced experience with AVEVA/Wonderware technologies, including InTouch, ArchestrA, and System Platform.
  • Experience with additional SCADA platforms such as GE CIMPLICITY, Siemens WinCC, or Ignition.
  • Experience with PLC platforms and associated software, including: Rockwell Automation: ControlLogix, RSLogix/Studio 5000, RSLinx, FactoryTalk Linx, BootP, and Logix Echo; Siemens: S7-400, TIA Portal, SIMATIC Manager STEP 7, and Proneta; Experience with ABB Drive Composer or Siemens STARTER software.
  • Knowledge of Visual Basic, .NET/Visual Studio, or Python.
  • Experience with industrial instrumentation and PID control technologies.
  • Previous experience commissioning industrial automation systems at customer sites.
  • Experience providing technical guidance or mentoring junior engineers.
What We're Looking For

We are looking for a true SCADA specialist who can take ownership of system development and maintenance without requiring extensive direction. The successful candidate should be comfortable opening a blank SCADA project, developing the necessary architecture and applications, integrating the system with industrial controls, and bringing the finished solution into operation. This individual should also have the technical depth to troubleshoot existing systems, identify opportunities for improvement, and support reliable day-to-day operation. The most important qualifications for this position are: Extensive hands-on SCADA development and maintenance experience. Strong proficiency with Wonderware OMI and AVEVA/Wonderware System Platform. Proven experience building complete SCADA projects from scratch. Ability to troubleshoot and maintain complex industrial automation systems. Willingness to provide occasional onsite support at service centers and customer locations.
