Overview

Woodard & Curran is a national engineering, science, and operations firm that focuses on clean water, a safe environment, healthy communities, and happy people. We are an employee-owned company that values collaboration, inclusion, professional growth, ownership, and flexibility to make a meaningful impact for clients, communities, and the planet.

Woodard & Curran is seeking a dynamic, client-focused SCADA Controls Automation Project Engineer to join our Water Team, supporting projects across the New England Region (Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut). The role involves collaborating with municipal clients to develop, implement, and manage a variety of water, wastewater, remediation, and some industrial projects with a focus on automation and control systems.

You’ll lead projects from planning through completion, supported by project managers, technical managers, engineers, and operations staff to ensure delivery within scope, schedule, and budget. Regular client interaction is key—you’ll serve as a trusted advisor, keeping clients and project managers informed on project status and identifying future opportunities to enhance operations.

This position involves regular travel to job sites (typically within driving distance) to oversee and lead SCADA project startups, lead preconstruction and kickoff meetings, and maintain strong client relationships throughout the project lifecycle.

Responsibilities
  • Lead medium to large-scale SCADA implementation projects, which may be standalone or multidisciplinary.
  • Perform site investigations to gather information about client systems, equipment, and instruments to develop SCADA system architecture options and upgrade migration paths with cost estimates.
  • Coordinate with Practice Leadership and Project Managers on identifying and developing new SCADA opportunities.
  • Support the Project Manager in writing technical content for proposals and client communications.
  • Work independently on small projects or lead teams on larger projects; mentor junior staff and provide technical oversight of subcontractors and vendors.
  • Develop process logic for PLCs used to monitor and control water and wastewater systems; design graphical screens for HMI and operator interfaces (OITs); and create automated reports for regulatory and client use.
  • Oversee and guide contractors in wiring and commissioning SCADA systems; configure and test instruments and SCADA hardware and networking components; participate in testing and startup activities to ensure proper monitoring and control.
  • Train operations personnel on SCADA system usage, maintenance, and troubleshooting; perform QA/QC for deliverables from design and controls teams; and adhere to safety protocols.
  • Foster and maintain relationships with key clients; collaborate with Project Managers and Senior Engineers to prepare documents and presentations with minimal guidance.
What you will need to succeed
  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • PE License or CAP (Certified Automation Professional) is a bonus.
  • 5+ years of experience in control system integration.
  • Extensive experience with Allen-Bradley PLC hardware/software; experience with other PLCs is a bonus.
  • Experience with HMI software (Allen-Bradley FactoryTalk, Schneider Wonderware, Ignition, GE Proficy iFix) and graphics development for OITs (e.g., PanelView, C-More).
  • Experience with automated reporting software and instrumentation in the water/wastewater industry.
  • Strong electrical and mechanical aptitude; proficient in Microsoft Office; network experience is a bonus; knowledge of higher programming languages is a bonus.
  • Water/wastewater industry experience is a bonus.

Salary: $95,000 - $130,000 a year The role offers the option for remote work, with a flexible pay range based on location and experience. Salary ranges by location may include:
