The ideal candidate for the SBA Underwriter position will have the skills and experience necessary to:
- Underwrite SBA guaranteed loan products, primarily 7a, Express, and 504 loans ensuring adherence to SBA SOP, bank policies, banking regulations, and laws.
- Compile data related to the preparation of credit packages, including spreads, cash flow, collateral value, appraisals, audits, and other data.
- Interpret analysis outcomes, prepare summaries and recommendations, and may present jointly with Relationship Managers to Credit Approvers.
- Evaluate and analyze loan applications for commercial, commercial RE, and business banking, forming opinions on approval or denial.
- Spread financial statements, identify credit strengths and weaknesses, and analyze creditworthiness in detail.
- Identify risks and mitigation factors during credit analysis for approval.
- Respond to internal and external customer inquiries.
- Recommend exceptions based on analysis findings.
- Work closely with Relationship Managers on complex loan structuring aspects, including rates, prepayment penalties, etc.
- Possibly have authority to approve loans beyond guidelines.
- The senior-most level may serve as a lead and be responsible for second-level approvals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Accounting, or related field, with 1+ year of relevant experience in underwriting, credit analysis, or related areas.
- A combination of education and experience may also qualify.
- Basic knowledge of commercial, RE, and small business credit underwriting, spread analysis, and related practices.
- Understanding of C&I and CRE loan requirements, risk identification, and financial statement analysis.
- Knowledge of lending policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
- Ability to analyze financial statements, business plans, credit reports, and debt ratios.
- Good judgment and decision-making skills.
- Ability to handle confidential information responsibly.
- Strong customer relations and communication skills.
- Self-starter with dependability, accuracy, attention to detail, and organizational skills.
- Working knowledge of relevant software applications.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of SBA SOP.
- 3+ years of SBA underwriting experience, including 7a, Express, and 504 loans.
- Experience with commercial loans involving construction components.
