Job description

Salt Lake City, Utah (On-site) | Full time, direct hire

THE OPPORTUNITY

Our client, a growing community bank, is hiring an experienced, entrepreneurial SBA Business Development Officer to develop and originate high-quality SBA lending opportunities. Mission Recruit is managing the search.

The bank keeps its SBA function fully in-house. It originates, underwrites, and closes its own loans rather than routing them to a third-party lender service provider, so you keep your borrower relationship from first conversation through funding. This is a growing platform, and the person in this role will play an important part in building it.

  • Everything is in-house. No lender service provider, no handing your borrower to a stranger, no waiting on an outside partner to close your deal.
  • You build the platform. A growing SBA program rather than a mature floor where the playbook is already written.
  • Close to decision-makers. A small bank means fewer layers between you and an answer.
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT AND LOAN ORIGINATION
  • Develop and maintain a consistent pipeline of SBA 7(a) and SBA 504 lending opportunities.
  • Prospect for new borrowers and referral relationships within your assigned market.
  • Build relationships with CPAs, attorneys, commercial real estate professionals, business brokers, loan brokers, financial advisors, bankers, CDCs, chambers of commerce, and economic development organizations.
  • Represent the bank at industry events, conferences, and community activities, and keep regular contact with existing referral partners.
  • Identify opportunities to expand relationships beyond the initial SBA transaction, including deposits, treasury management, and other commercial banking services.
TRANSACTION SCREENING AND STRUCTURING
  • Conduct preliminary discussions with prospective borrowers covering the business, financing request, ownership structure, sources and uses, collateral, repayment ability, and SBA eligibility.
  • Evaluate transactions against bank credit standards and SBA eligibility requirements before submitting them for underwriting.
  • Structure transactions to balance borrower needs, SBA requirements, and the bank's risk appetite.
  • Prepare complete, accurate preliminary loan packages and clearly communicate credit strengths, weaknesses, risks, and mitigating factors.
  • Work with underwriting and credit to resolve questions and obtain additional borrower information.
PIPELINE AND COMPLIANCE
  • Maintain a current, accurate pipeline and report regularly on new opportunities, applications, submissions, approvals, closings, funded loans, and referral source activity.
  • Proactively identify obstacles that could delay underwriting, approval, documentation, or closing.
  • Maintain working knowledge of current SBA SOP requirements, eligibility standards, and lending procedures.
  • Partner with operations, credit, closing, and compliance to ensure transactions meet SBA requirements and bank policy, with appropriate documentation throughout.
WHAT YOU BRING
  • Five or more years of SBA lending, SBA business development, or commercial lending experience, with a demonstrated ability to originate.
  • A documented production track record of at least $10 million in annual funded SBA volume. Producers consistently funding $20 million or more are strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of SBA 7(a) lending. Familiarity with SBA 504 and Certified Development Companies preferred.
  • Working knowledge of business financial statements, tax returns, cash flow analysis, debt service coverage, collateral, and business valuation concepts.
  • An established, portable referral network and the self-direction to develop new business without inbound lead support.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and the organizational discipline to manage multiple transactions at once.
  • Ability to work effectively with underwriting, credit, closing, compliance, and executive management.
HOW PERFORMANCE IS MEASURED

Performance is evaluated on both production and credit quality, which is worth knowing up front if you are used to a volume-only scorecard. Measures include:

  • Funded SBA volume and number of quality opportunities generated.
  • Pull-through rate from application to funding.
  • Quality and completeness of submitted loan packages.
  • New referral sources developed and repeat business from established ones.
  • Deposit and broader banking relationships generated.
  • Portfolio credit performance and compliance with SBA requirements and bank policy.
  • Contribution to the overall profitability of the SBA lending program.
SCOPE AND AUTHORITY

This role reports to the Chief Credit Officer. You will originate, screen, recommend, and help structure SBA transactions. Independent credit approval authority is not part of the role unless specifically granted under the bank's loan policy, and all credit decisions remain subject to the bank's underwriting standards, approval authorities, and SBA requirements.

Travel is regular within your assigned market, with occasional national travel.

BRING YOUR CLOSER

Many strong originators work best with a loan processor or closer they already trust. Our client is open to hiring that person alongside you. If that describes your situation, raise it early and we will build it into the conversation.

COMPENSATION

Competitive base salary plus performance-based incentive compensation and a full benefits package. Incentive compensation considers funded SBA production, loan profitability, credit quality, and compliance.

Our client is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other protected characteristic.
