Job summary

Woodgrain in Elkin, NC is seeking an experienced Production Supervisor for the sawmill. You will oversee safety, quality and productivity, guiding daily activities to meet scheduling and inventory goals.

The role involves developing staff, driving continuous improvement, and ensuring adherence to policies. The ideal candidate has 3+ years in supervision in lumber production, strong manufacturing knowledge, NHLA grading experience, and excellent communication.

Woodgrain in Elkin, NC is looking for an experienced sawmill Production Supervisor.

Our Woodgrain facility in Elkin, NC is a sawmill operation providing materials to our manufacturing facilities as well as to various external customers. Woodgrain Inc. is headquartered in Fruitland, Idaho with six divisions and over 45 manufacturing and warehouse facilities in the United States and South America. Job Summary

The Production Supervisor is responsible for the safety, quality and productivity of the sawmill department. This position manages the daily activities of employees working in the sawmill department to achieve the company’s goals and objectives. This position is also responsible for assisting the Plant Manager or Production Manager to ensure that the sawmill operations meet expectations for production scheduling, inventory control, operating rate and facility financial performance. The Supervisor leads by being aware of and helping to resolve employee issues, building teamwork, and ensuring adherence to all applicable company policies and procedures. This position has authority to effectively recommend hiring and firing.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Leads the overall safety, quality, and morale objectives of the Sawmill Department.
  • Assists the Producton Manager with developing and implementing long range and short-term objectives, plans and programs for the plant which align with overall business objectives.
  • Leads a culture of continuous improvement and be a champion of activities, programs and events to drive continuous improvement efforts throughout the Plant.
  • Facilitates daily Tailgate meetings to address conditions, trends, and important daily activities affecting the quality issues and other business needs.
  • Communicates/Plans production targets and delegate resources to ensure productivity and customer orders meet quantity/quality specifications, are ready for delivery and are delivered on scheduled.
  • Provides for the optimum utilization of personnel by driving cross-training efforts and covering employees on leave.
  • Actively ensure training and development of assigned personnel to maximize safety, quality and productivity across the production departments.
  • Must be available to work in a production-manufacturing environment.
  • Supports awareness of environmental and safety concerns in a proactive manner to ensure a safe environment for our associates and community.
  • Monitors and approves employee’s timesheets.
  • Trains and develops hourly employees and issues corrective actions when necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Three (3) years of supervisory or management (experience in a lumber production facility is preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing process.
  • NHLA hardwood lumber grading experience
  • Demonstrated project management, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in planning, implementing, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Experience leading engaged teams/workforce.
  • Experience in analyzing production data to eliminate waste and foster continuous improvement.
  • Leadership/supervisory experience in a related job function.
  • Proven skills in a production environment with an understanding of manufacturing practices.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work well with people and to facilitate change and growth in a team environment.
  • Ability to motivate teams to produce quality materials within tight time frames and simultaneously manage several projects.
  • Ability to participate in and facilitate group meetings.
  • Ability to work with all levels of an organization.
  • Work requires professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be available to work swing shift in a production-manufacturing environment.
  • Computer skills are essential.
  • Detail oriented and work accuracy focus.

The physical demands and work environment are representative of a typical sawmill environment. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. Noise level is moderate to high depending on the area of the mill. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. Requires close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds and is regularly exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and extreme hot and cold temperatures.
