Job summary

CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a Research Scientist in Satellite Data Assimilation and Atmospheric Chemistry Model Development within NOAA CSL in Boulder, CO. The successful candidate will advance a satellite data assimilation framework for global air quality forecasting using UFS-Chem.

The role involves developing and validating atmospheric-chemistry transport models, integrating JEDI, updating emissions, and publishing findings.

Qualifications

  • PhD in atmospheric sciences or related field; 2+ years postdoc by Oct 1, 2026.
  • Experience with satellite data assimilation is required.
  • Experience with atmospheric chemical-transport model development (UFS experience preferred) is required.
  • Experience with statistical evaluations and validations is required.
  • Experience publishing in peer-reviewed literature is required.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and validates atmospheric chemical-transport models for research and operational use.
  • Incorporates JEDI framework for satellite data assimilation into UFS-Chem.
  • Updates fire emissions in UFS-Chem to improve ozone and aerosols simulations.
  • Evaluates model output against observations and publishes findings.
  • Performs other relevant duties as necessary.
