Job summary

General Dynamics Information Technology, Inc. is seeking a Systems Engineer to support a high‑profile federal maintenance program in Washington, DC.

You will serve as the maintenance SME for a government client, resolving complex issues with strong technical and customer service skills to keep critical communications assets mission-ready. You will partner with the client on planning, configuration, and sustainment of mobile and fixed platforms, including SATCOM, LMR, and IP‑based voice

Qualifications

  • Active Top Secret clearance with SCI access.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical input and guidance on planning, configuring and implementing mobile and fixed communications platforms.
  • Deliver system administration, troubleshooting, and end-user support for LMR, SATCOM, cellular routing, and Windows terminals.
  • Perform routine maintenance on SATCOM systems, multi‑band radios, IP endpoints, servers and network gear to maintain mission readiness.
  • Manage inventory and life-cycle maintenance for communications and IT equipment.
  • Support logistics for acquisition, storage, relocation, and deployment of equipment.
  • Create and maintain SOPs, task documentation, and system updates for consistent operations.

How a Systems Engineer will make an impact
  • Provide technical input and guidance to the customer in the planning, configuring and implementation of mobile and fixed communications platforms, with emphasis on safety, reliability, supportability, and long-term sustainment.
  • Deliver system administration, operational support, troubleshooting, and end‑user assistance for land mobile radio (LMR), satellite communications (SATCOM), cellular‑based routing solutions, and Windows‑based terminals in tactical and field environments.
  • Perform routine and emergency maintenance and repair on SATCOM systems, multi‑band radio platforms, IP‑based voice endpoints, computing devices, and core data network equipment (servers, KVMs, routers, switches, distribution panels) to maintain system availability and mission readiness.
  • Manage inventory records and life‑cycle maintenance schedules for communications and IT equipment, supporting accurate asset visibility, planned refresh, and ongoing sustainment of operational systems.
  • Support logistics activities related to the acquisition, storage, relocation, and deployment of communications equipment to ensure timely access to resources required to sustain and expand mission communications capabilities.
  • Handle communications security (COMSEC) keying material in accordance with applicable DoD and unit COMSEC policies and procedures to protect the integrity and confidentiality of secure communications.
  • Provide recommendations on replacements, upgrades, and enhancements to existing communications capabilities to ensure systems remain modern, resilient, and supportable over time.
  • Create and maintain documentation for standard operating procedures, recurring tasks, and system updates, enabling consistent operations and efficient troubleshooting across the supported organization.
  • Develop and deliver training for unit personnel on the proper operation and routine maintenance of secure mobile communications platforms, supporting long‑term sustainment of deployed systems.
What you’ll need to succeed
  • Highly knowledgeable on mobile communications systems to include the Iridium satellite constellation, 4G LTE/5G mobile routers, secure mobile cellular devices, and VHF/SHF/UHF radio platforms.
  • Understanding of IP networking fundamentals, VOIP systems architecture, encrypted video teleconferencing (VTC) systems, and the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).
  • Knowledge of satellite communications technologies to include UHF/Ku/Ka bands, Milstar capabilities, WGS capabilities, TDMA and FDMA network architecture, and procedures for accessing communications assets in the space segment.
  • Knowledge of radio frequency theory, including HF radio propagation, VHF radio capabilities, and radio encryption methods.
  • Understanding of site design and equipment integration based on established deployment operating procedures and requirements.
  • Familiar with systems integration procedures to include hardware framing and mounting methods, basic soldering, power tool operation, minor modification of plastic and metal bench stock parts, and cable installation and removal techniques.
  • Knowledge of general principles of electrical circuits, fabricating and splicing of electrical connectors, and testing electronic equipment using digital multimeters.
  • Experience in troubleshooting complex communications problems using specialized testing equipment such as spectrum analyzers, optical time domain reflectometers (OTDR), bit error rate testers, network traffic analyzers, and packet inspection equipment.
  • Working knowledge of Windows 10, Windows administrative tools, and Windows software interoperability.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted standards pertaining to technical writing/documentation associated with operational requirements documents, standard operating procedures, and quick reference guides.
  • Understanding of solutions procurement process to include assessment of alternatives, requirements analysis, budget restrictions, and implementation constraints.
Qualifications
  • Available for travel within the continental United States for periods of time up to two weeks in support of mission activities.
  • Possesses an active TOP SECRET/SCI clearance and possesses eligibility requirements to access classified information.
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communications skills with the ability to articulate complex mission information to members of U.S. Government’s leadership.
  • Be capable of establishing and cultivating friendly relationships with partner agency personnel, third party equipment providers, and sibling programs.
  • Must be self‑sufficient and capable of maintaining required operational tempo when working autonomously or with minimal supervision.
  • Work location will be in Washington, D.C. and offices in the DMV area.
  • Work hours are flexible, but contract staff must meet minimal requirements on a weekly basis.
  • CONUS travel is at the request of the customer and may not be flexible under some circumstances.
  • Education: BS/BA or Equivalent experience
  • Required Experience: 3+ Years’ related experience
  • Required Technical Skills: CompTIA Security+ (or DoDD 8140 IAT II Compliance)
  • Security Clearance Level: Active Top Secret with SCI
  • Eligibility Required Skills and Abilities: Excellent written communication and technical documentation skills

The likely salary range for this position is $72,877 - $98,599. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
