StartDate: ASAP

The University of Michigan Medical School’s Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology, seeks a dedicated Sarcoma Medical Oncologist to join the multidisciplinary sarcoma program at the Rogel Cancer Center. This academic faculty opportunity is designed for a physician committed to building a long-term career in rare and complex sarcoma research and patient care in a well-established multidisciplinary connective tissue oncology-focused team.

The successful candidate will provide comprehensive outpatient and inpatient care while contributing to clinical trials, drug development, translational research, academic scholarship, and the education of medical students, residents, and fellows. The role offers access to a collaborative team spanning medical oncology, orthopedic oncology, surgical oncology, thoracic oncology, skull-based surgery, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology, and additional surgical specialties. The role offers the opportunity to collaborate with basic and translational science investigators focused on sarcoma biology, cancer genetics, and tumor immunology.

Opportunity Highlights
  • Join a highly specialized sarcoma program at the Rogel Cancer Center with a strong multidisciplinary academic foundation and reputation
  • Build a practice dedicated to the full spectrum of soft tissue and bone sarcomas, with flexibility for candidates who bring a focused area of expertise in clinical care and/or research
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary clinical and research team across medical oncology, orthopedic oncology, surgical oncology, thoracic surgery, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology, and other specialties
  • Participate in approximately 10 to 15 active therapeutic sarcoma clinical trials at any given time, including opportunities in drug development and biomarker and genomic research
  • Pursue clinical, translational, or basic research interests without restriction to a single research pathway
  • Work within an anticipated 70% clinical and 30% research structure, with flexibility for candidates who bring significant external funding or an established translational research program
  • Contribute to National Comprehensive Cancer Network treatment guidelines for bone and soft tissue sarcoma
  • Opportunities for support from the Rogel Comprehensive Cancer Center and access to clinical and research support services, including a robust biostatistical, tissue and molecular pathology core.
  • Maintain approximately four half-day outpatient clinic sessions per week, with the potential for a reduced clinical commitment depending on funding, research focus, and program needs.
  • Participate in approximately six weeks of inpatient service annually, with outpatient schedules adjusted during service assignments
  • Teach and mentor medical students, residents, and medical oncology fellows in a learner-focused academic environment
  • Contribute to the continued growth of the sarcoma program, with potential leadership opportunities based on experience, interests, and evolving program needs
Ideal Candidate

  • Specialized training or meaningful clinical experience in sarcoma oncology, preferably within an academic medical center
  • A clear commitment to a career focused on sarcoma care, research, and academic medicine
