SANITATION WORKER I Public Works / Sanitation
The Sanitation Worker I ensures the cleanliness, safety, & upkeep of Salina's residential areas & public spaces by efficiently collecting & disposing of waste, recyclables, & bulk items. This role is essential in maintaining a healthy environment for the community by managing waste disposal, recycling processes, & handling hazardous materials properly. By supporting sanitation operations, the worker contributes directly to public health, environmental sustainability, & the overall quality of life in Salina.

Duties:
· Loads garbage, recycling, & yard waste into sanitation or recycling trucks efficiently.
· Empties refuse, recycling carts, & large containers from residential locations.
· Assists with unloading recyclables or solid waste at designated sites, including landfill or recycling facilities; unloads recyclables from vehicles.
· Removes litter, debris, & trash from streets, alleys, & public spaces, ensuring clean & safe environments.
· Collects bulk waste, including furniture, appliances, & other large items as part of special collection services; ensures proper handling & disposal of hazardous waste & large debris.
· Performs heavy manual labor in the collection of solid waste.
· Maintains landfill sites.
· Services trucks & equipment as required; repairs refuse carts.
Education: High school diploma or G.E.D.
Experience:
· Experience in manual labor, preferably in waste management, recycling, construction, or other heavy physical labor roles; knowledge of waste disposal or recycling procedures is beneficial.
· Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks for extended periods, including lifting heavy objects, running designated routes, & enduring outdoor work in adverse weather conditions.
Requirements:
· Must possess valid Kansas driver’s license at hire.
· Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older.
Work Type: Heavy, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Machines, Tools, Equipment: Brooms, hydraulic lifts, power washers, sanitation trucks (packer trucks, recycling trucks, etc.), shovels, rakes & other equipment used in waste collection & maintenance tasks.
Hours: Monday – Friday; shift begins at 7:00 a.m.
Starting pay DOQ:
· $17.21-18.07/hr.
· $35,797-37,586/yr.
· Additional $1.50/hour paid for hours worked after 6:00 p.m. & before 6:00 a.m.
Paid Time Off:
· 48 hours of vacation available upon hire; additional 48 hours earned during the year (96 hours in first year).
· 96 hours of sick leave during first year.
