The hiring pay rate for this position is $18.23/hr. Under the direct supervision of the Sanitation Foreman, or designee. Performs heavy manual labor in the collection and disposal of all types of waste and refuse materials for the Sanitation Division of the Public Works Department. Work is performed with some independence and acts in the capacity of Crew Leader on certain projects and assignments. Work is performed in accordance with all applicable City codes and Departmental policies. Requires the ability to be contacted by telephone for call-out after hours. Work is reviewed through observations and obtained results.
- Drives sanitation truck and is responsible for proper operation and maintenance of equipment.
- Exercises caution in driving and operating equipment in order to avoid accidents and injuries.
- Fuels truck, checks various items such as tires, batteries, oil, water, and etc. (CDL Pre-trips)
- Performs minor maintenance as needed.
- Reports safety hazards or needed repairs to equipment to Sanitation Foreman.
- Collects waste and refuse; empties contents of refuse cans into sanitation truck.
- Rakes and loads grass and brush collections.
- Cleans refuse and trash from trucks and equipment.
- Reports violations of refuse ordinances to supervisor.
- Performs general housekeeping for all sanitation areas and equipment.
- Mandatory overtime is possible and/or likely.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE. ABILITIES. AND SKILLS- Ability to understand, communicate, and follow instructions.
- Knowledge of the operation of motor driven equipment and refuse collection practices.
- Ability to operate sanitation trucks and packer equipment.
- Ability to learn rules and regulations pertaining to refuse collection; retain knowledge of the locations of refuse containers on assigned routes.
- Ability to work at a constant pace and in all weather conditions.
- Ability to lift heavy weights.
- Ability to effectively interact with citizens, fellow employees, and the general public.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE- Graduation from high school, or GED
- Supplemented by one (1) year experience in the operation of solid waste vehicles and equipment
- Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License, with air brake endorsement
