Job summary

Louisiana Department of Health seeks a Sanitarian 4 to perform statewide public health inspections, investigations, and enforcement across multiple programs. This role emphasizes leadership, technical inspection skills, and fieldwork beyond the domicile parish, with frequent statewide travel.

Qualifications

  • Possession of a current Louisiana Sanitarian's license.
  • Three years of experience as a sanitarian; OR a master's degree in public health, food science, dairy science, environmental or sanitary science, or one of the physical or biological sciences plus two years of experience as a sanitarian.
  • NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Molluscan Shellfish program requires completing the Louisiana Boating Education program and certification by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts inspections of retail food markets, restaurants, and other food establishments to verify sanitary conditions and compliance with the State Sanitary Code.
  • Inspects sewage and waste disposal systems for residential, commercial, community, and trailer park facilities to ensure proper waste disposal and compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Manages and directs inspections of institutions, including schools, prisons, day care centers, nursing homes, and other facilities, to verify sanitary and hygienic conditions.
  • Directs investigations and resolution of complaints involving unsanitary conditions, nuisances, and other environmental or public health concerns.
  • Administers Sanitarian Services programs within the designated parish by implementing program guidelines, monitoring productivity, maintaining accurate records, and preparing activity reports.
  • Directs environmental and public health activities during emergencies, including floods, hurricanes, vandalism, and accidental contamination, which may require work outside normal business hours and on weekends.
  • Communicates with public officials, civic groups, and community stakeholders regarding environmental and public health concerns; participates in required training and continuing education to maintain professional expertise and licensure.
