Job summary

Consolidated Municipality of Carson City’s Carson City Health and Human Services is seeking a forensic nurse examiner to perform sexual assault examinations. You will respond to requests, collect evidence, assess infection risks, and discuss treatment options with patients.

Responsibilities

• Administer comprehensive sexual assault examinations including timely response to requests, obtain forensic evidence, assess STI risk, provide treatment or prophylaxis, discuss pregnancy risk and options with patient.
• Collect forensic evidence timely, maintain chain of custody, and document properly.
• Provide deposition and court testimony regarding sexual assault examinations.
• Collaborate with SART Medical Director to establish policies, procedures and competencies.
• Coordinate with law enforcement, prosecutors and victim advocates to ensure complete patient care and maintain chain of evidence.
• Participate in program meetings and case reviews; engage in quality improvement activities related to examinations.
• Maintain HIPAA compliance and confidentiality; stay current with regulations.
• Advise patients on medical and social services; maintain accurate records.
• Keep abreast of trends in sexual assault care and compile required reports.

Education

Nevada State Registered Nursing License

Valid Driver's License

IAFN-approved forensic nursing course

Job description

Under general supervision performs sexual assault examinations and works at the Carson City Health and Human Services.

Salary: This position will be paid $600.00 per examination, $300 for a re-exam.

• Administer the comprehensive sexual assault examinations including, but not limited to, timely response to requests to provide the examination, obtaining forensic evidence, evaluating patients for the possibility of sexually transmitted infections, providing treatment and/or prophylactic treatment of sexually transmitted infections, assessment of pregnancy risk and discussion of treatment options with the patient.
• Perform timely and accurate collection of forensic evidence and maintain and document chain of custody evidence.
• Provides deposition and court testimony regarding sexual assault examinations.
• Assists the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) Medical Director in the establishment of policies, procedures, and personnel competencies as they relate to sexual assault exams within the SART program and collaborates with the SART Medical Director in developing protocols and standing orders.
• Collaborates with the SART Medical Director, law enforcement, prosecutors and victim advocates to provide complete care for patients and to ensure and maintain chain of evidence.
• Consults with the SART team members and participates in program meetings.
• Participates in case reviews, quality review and continuous quality improvement activities as they pertain to sexual assault examinations and provisions of services to victims of sexual assault.
• Complies with all Health Insurance Portability Authorization Act (HIPAA) requirements, Federal, State and local laws regarding confidentiality of personal health information and City policies regarding HIPAA and confidentiality.
• Advise patients on available and appropriate medical and social services available.
• Keep accurate patient records; maintain confidentiality at all times.
• Stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the areas of sexual assault.
• Compile and submit necessary medical/statistical reports and data in a timely fashion.
• Apply basic time management and patient care coordination skills to effectively provide nursing and health care services.
• Contributes to the overall quality of the department's service provision by developing and coordinating work teams and by reviewing, recommending and implementing improved policies and procedures.
• Uses standard office equipment, including a computer, in the course of the work.
• Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with patients, family members, visitors, and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
• Complies with all Nevada State Board of Nursing's scope of practice for sexual assault nurse examiners.

Education and Experience:

Nevada State Registered Nurses License

Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:

• Valid Driver's License.
• Nevada State Registered Nursing License.
• Successful completion of an IAFN-approved course of study, including clinical hours required by the program (Nevada State Board of Nursing), provide for proficiency maintenance "as required by the current standards of nursing practice, to be verified in circumstances of gaining/maintaining employment as a forensic nurse or upon request by the NSBN pursuant to NAC 632.071, 224, and 225 (Nevada State Board of Nursing)
• Must complete four (4) continuing education units in forensics annually.
