Job summary

Girtz Industries, Inc. in Monticello, IN is seeking a sandblast operator to abrade surfaces of metal parts and prepare them for painting. The role requires reading prints, basic math, and using a tape measure to set up blasting parameters.

You will move parts in and out of the blast booth, regulate abrasive flow, and inspect finished surfaces to ensure conformance to specs. Training is provided; this is a full-time, on-site position.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with 1–3 months related experience or training.
  • Ability to read instructions, short correspondence and memos.
  • Able to read prints.
  • Able to write simple correspondence.
  • Able to read and use a tape measure.
  • Able to add/subtract two-digit numbers and multiply/divide with 10s and 100s.
  • Ability to follow detailed but simple instructions.
  • Must stand, walk, and use hands; reach, balance, climb, stoop or crawl.
  • Regularly lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally more than 100 pounds.
  • Vision abilities including close and distance vision.
  • Exposure to fumes/airborne particles; noise usually loud.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Shovels or pours abrasives such as sand, grit, or shot into machine hopper.
  • Masks specified areas of object to protect from abrasion.
  • Moves product to be sandblasted into/out of sand blast booth.
  • Turns valves to regulate pressure and abrasive flow.
  • Starts equipment to blast surfaces for required interval.
  • Examines product after blast for specifications.
  • Cleans product of blast media before moving to paint area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Purpose: Abrades surfaces of metal or hard composition objects to remove adhering scale, sand, paint, grease, tar, rust and dirt and to impart specified finish.
Job Requirements:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) with 1 – 3 months related experience and / or training or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
  • Ability to read prints.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to read and use a tape measure.
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but simple written or oral instructions.
  • Will be regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear.
  • The employee must regularly lift and / or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and / or move more than 100 pounds..
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and / or humid conditions; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; and vibration. The noise level of the work environment is usually loud.

  • Must be able to use and work in protective equipment including but not limited to; fully enclosed helmet; protective suit; respiratory protection; gloves; boots.
Job duties:
  • This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
  • Shovels or pours abrasives such as sand, grit, or shot of specified grade into machine hopper.
  • Masks specified areas of object as indicated on job print to protect from abrading action and the accumulation of blast media which may harm the product’s functionality (e.g., silencers).
  • Moves product to be sandblasted into and out of sand blast booth.
  • Turns valves on equipment to regulate pressure and composition of abrasive mixture flowing through nozzle or into tumbling barrel.
  • Starts equipment that directs blast or flow of blast media over surface of parts and blasts for specified interval to achieve required surface specifications.
  • Examines product after blast to ensure conformance to specifications.
  • Cleans product of blast media prior to moving it to the paint or powder area of production.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
