Sample Management Research Technician 3/4 (Research Tec 3/4)

Job Overview

The successful applicant will work with special nuclear material, including sub-sampling, nuclear material accounting (LIMS/LANMAS), shipping preparation, and nuclear waste management at one of three locations: TA-55 plutonium facility (PF-4)/CMR facility and/or PF-400 (RLUOB) facility. Responsibilities may also include sample preparation for various chemical techniques following established procedures. Maintaining QA/QC documentation and records is required. The candidate will collaborate with technicians, technologists, and scientists in a production-oriented environment focused on nuclear material characterization, product certification, and process improvements to maximize chemistry resource efficiency in support of the production mission.

Position Levels

This position will be filled at either Research Technician 3 or 4 level, depending on the candidate's skills. Higher-level responsibilities are outlined below:

Research Technician 3

• Conduct technical work in assigned facilities, as directed.
• Handle nuclear material in gloveboxes and vaults, including movement and maintenance activities.
• Maintain detailed records and documentation.
• Follow procedures and suggest improvements.
• Work with limited supervision, adhering to safety and security protocols.

Research Technician 4

• Perform all Technician 3 duties, plus:
• Work independently with initiative.
• Coordinate tasks through the IWM process.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

• Ability to work with hazardous chemicals and nuclear materials.
• Experience following documented procedures.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Basic computer proficiency.
• U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a Q clearance and HRP access.

For Technician 4 level, additional qualifications include:

• Ability to work independently and demonstrate organizational skills.
• Knowledge of safety, security, and QA practices.

Education & Experience

Associate's degree in a relevant field with 3 years (level 3) or 5 years (level 4) of related experience, or equivalent.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience in nuclear facilities and highly regulated environments.
• Use of laboratory information management systems (LIMS/LANMAS).
• Coding experience and a Bachelor's degree in STEM preferred.

Work Environment & Location

Work is onsite in Los Alamos, NM, in a safety-sensitive, nuclear environment with radiation and chemical hazards. The position requires compliance with safety protocols and HRP. The role supports the Laboratory’s national security missions.
