Job Description

The Tax Managing Director, State and Local Taxation is responsible for providing written tax advice to clients, evaluating and recommending courses of action to reduce tax burden and compliance costs, recognizing potential tax risks, and identifying changes in tax policy and regulations. This role involves marketing, networking, business development within their area of expertise, and maintaining key client relationships. Additionally, the Tax Managing Director is a key member of the office’s / region’s Tax Services leadership team, providing guidance on complex tax issues.

Job Responsibilities
  1. Research: Conduct research on tax topics, analyze findings, prepare tax implication studies, and collaborate with other tax professionals to resolve complex issues.
  2. Tax Compliance: Ensure client compliance, identify options to minimize tax and reporting burdens, manage engagement metrics, and support sales tax compliance initiatives.
  3. Tax Consulting: Handle inquiries from tax authorities, draft responses, monitor project implementation, and provide tailored solutions based on industry knowledge.
  4. Tax Controversy: Represent clients before tax authorities, respond to inquiries and challenges.
  5. Tax Specialization: Act as SALT industry expert, identify cross-selling opportunities, manage SALT services, and develop tools for practice efficiency.
  6. Accounting for Income Taxes – SFAS109: Prepare tax workpapers.
  7. ASC740-10: Apply industry standards, recognize financial benefits, and ensure compliance.
  8. Strategy Development: Innovate to reduce taxes and expenses, participate in industry groups, lead marketing campaigns.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervise and review work of SALT team members, ensure training, evaluate performance, and support professional development.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; Master’s preferred.
  • Juris Doctorate preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of SALT experience, supervisory experience required.
  • Experience with tax provisions, corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships preferred.
Certifications and Skills
  • CPA or relevant certification preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and tax software.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, organizational skills, and leadership capabilities.
