Job Summary
The Manager, Business Development is a mid-level management role responsible for leading business development activities and teams to drive revenue growth, market expansion, and strategic partnerships. This role manages business development professionals and/or major initiatives, identifies new growth opportunities, and translates strategy into executable plans. The Manager, Business Development has a direct impact on topline growth, market positioning, and longterm business strategy.
Job Description
The Manager, Business Development leads efforts to identify, evaluate, and pursue new business opportunities across products, markets, customers, or partnerships. The role balances people leadership, opportunity management, and strategic planning while partnering closely with Sales, Marketing, Product, Finance, and Executive Leadership.
This position ensures alignment between business development initiatives, commercial strategy, and operational capabilities and serves as an escalation point for complex negotiations or strategic decisions.
The role typically reports to a Director of Business Development, Sales Director, Commercial Leader, or Vice President of Growth/Strategy, depending on organizational structure.
Key Responsibilities
People Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, coach, and develop Business Development Managers, Specialists, or Analysts
- Set clear performance expectations tied to growth objectives and pipeline targets
- Conduct performance reviews, feedback, and development planning
- Support hiring, onboarding, and capability development
Business Development Strategy & Execution
- Translate company growth strategy into actionable business development plans
- Identify, evaluate, and prioritize new market, customer, and partnership opportunities
- Manage the opportunity pipeline from identification through qualification and handoff
- Ensure disciplined tracking of leads, opportunities, and outcomes
Market & Opportunity Analysis
- Analyze market trends, customer needs, competitive landscape, and growth potential
- Build business cases for new products, markets, or partnerships
- Evaluate financial, operational, and strategic implications of opportunities
- Present recommendations and insights to senior leadership
Partnerships, Negotiation & Deal Support
- Lead or support development of strategic partnerships, alliances, or joint ventures
- Participate in contract discussions, pricing strategy, and deal structuring
- Serve as escalation point for complex negotiations or highvalue opportunities
- Partner with Legal, Finance, and Operations to ensure deal viability and compliance
CrossFunctional Collaboration
- Work closely with Sales to align opportunity development with commercial execution
- Partner with Marketing on value propositions, messaging, and gotomarket strategies
- Collaborate with Product, Engineering, or Operations to assess feasibility and scalability
- Ensure smooth transition of qualified opportunities into execution teams
Performance Tracking & Continuous Improvement
- Define and monitor KPIs related to pipeline health, conversion, and growth outcomes
- Review performance trends and adjust strategies as neededImprove business development processes, tools, and governance
- Share best practices and lessons learned across teams
Scope & Impact
- Manages a team or portfolio of business development initiatives

Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Finance, Engineering, or related field required
- Previous experience in business development, sales, strategy, or commercial roles required
