The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission is seeking a Third Mate for the U.S. Brig Niagara, Pennsylvania's flagship, based at the Erie Maritime Museum. This seasonal role involves ship operations, training, maintenance, safety, guest interaction, and public interpretation, from March to October 2027.

You will support safe sailing, guide crew through daily seamanship tasks, and contribute to training and upkeep while engaging visitors with the ship's history and significance.

Qualifications

• One year experience aboard a sailing vessel, including six months as a ship's sailmaker.
• USCG Able-Bodied Seaman Certification required.
• Two years of traditional rig sailing, including at least one year on square rig and one year in a supervisory capacity.
• First Aid Training preferred.

Responsabilités

• Direct crew during sailing, docking, and undocking activities.
• Lead drills and demonstrate seamanship techniques.
• Monitor upkeep tasks and help prepare reports and work lists.
• Maintain first aid supplies and support safe practices on board.
• Help interpret the ship's history and welcome museum guests.
• Keep ship, shop, and berthing area clean and ready for public viewing.
