Job summary

UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester is seeking a Safety System Technician Assistant to install and repair fire detection systems throughout the University. Responsibilities include maintaining fire safety records, performing inspections, and responding to fire detection incidents in compliance with NFPA regulations.

Job description

General Summary Of Position

Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor or designee, the Safety System Technician Assistant installs, repairs, operates, tests, and modifies equipment used in supervised fire detection, notification and suppression systems throughout the University and off‑site facilities. He or she has responsibility to ensure a fire‑safe environment, provide proper training to all facilities staff members and maintain test and repair records.

Major Responsibilities
  • Maintain record keeping of annual fire extinguisher inspections campus wide per NFPA requirements
  • Maintain and inspect all portable fire extinguishers and fire related systems as scheduled
  • Generate reports and documentation of drills, testing and inspection activities
  • Perform weekly, monthly, semi‑annual and annual maintenance and inspections on all fire protection related systems and equipment as the tests relate to NFPA and TJC requirements
  • Perform to identify/inspect fire/smoke/corridor doors per NFPA
  • Perform and support monthly/annual fire service elevator recall testing per NFPA and Massachusetts code requirements
  • Maintain and file in a legible manner all compliance related documentation
  • Respond to all fire detection system related incidents per NFPA requirements
  • Correct, modify, and revise drawings to reflect new installations and changes
  • Maintain spare parts inventory and other materials as needed
  • While in the performance of routine duties; may be required, needed to perform all work associated with all maintenance trades of an equal or lower grade classification; where the work or task does not require a specific license
  • Perform other duties as required
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma, or equivalent experience
  • 3 years experience working with computerized intelligent fire alarm systems or equivalent experience
  • Working knowledge of central station fire alarm configuration and various automatic sprinkler systems
  • Normal visual acuity, manual dexterity, ability to lift 50 lbs.; work from ladders, and in confined spaces
  • Working knowledge of the Massachusetts State Fire Regulations (NFPA and TJC Standards)
  • Ability to travel to off‑site locations
  • Ability to identify device descriptions within the fire alarm monitoring system
  • Knowledge of fully addressable fire alarm systems
  • Knowledge of fire alarm related testing equipment
  • Knowledge of fire alarm related system parts/components
