Job summary

NYC School Bus Umbrella Services, Inc. seeks a Safety & Training Manager to lead driver management, safety compliance, and on-site training across depots in New York. You will conduct investigations, oversee inspections, and coordinate with the NYC Office of Pupil Transportation to uphold safety standards.

This role may involve on-route coaching and direct support to depot teams. This position requires CDL, bilingual skills, and a commitment to FERPA confidentiality; occasional on-route coaching

Qualifications

  • Eligible to work in the U.S.
  • 5+ years of bus driver management/field supervision (Student transport preferred).
  • 3+ years training bus drivers behind the wheel.
  • 2+ years safety compliance experience, preferably in school bus env.
  • DMV 19-A Certification required.
  • NY CDL Class B with P and S endorsements or obtainable within 90 days.
  • Bilingual: Spanish, French or Haitian Creole valued.
  • Reasonable Suspicion training/certification preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid training/certification preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of bus safety standards, laws and pupil transportation practices.

Responsibilities

  • Support and reinforce safety culture through one-on-one and group training for drivers, attendants, mechanics, and staff.
  • Partner with depot management to improve employee performance and safety awareness.
  • Oversee pre/post-trip inspections with Fleet Maintenance for timely corrective action.
  • Evaluate driver performance by on-route observations and coaching.
  • Analyze safety data to identify trends and present findings to leadership.
  • Investigate incidents and hazards; prepare reports and recommend corrective actions.
  • Ensure depots comply with safety standards and qualifications; manage requalification forms.
  • Coordinate random, post-accident and reasonable suspicion drug/alcohol testing.
  • Assist with depot operations to ensure consistent, safe service delivery.
  • Occasionally act as a bus driver to cover routes when needed.
  • Engage with NYC Office of Pupil Transportation on route safety and logistics.
  • Maintain confidentiality and FERPA compliance at all times.

Job description

  • Support and reinforce NYCSBUS’s safety culture through one-on-one and group employee training and coaching to bus drivers, attendants, mechanics and other employees
  • Work with depot management teams to understand and improve employee performance to raise awareness of and support the safety culture.
  • Identify and assist with pre- and post-trip inspections, working with Fleet Maintenance staff to ensure vehicle problems are corrected timely and initiating corrective action with employees for non-compliance.
  • Evaluate the performance of Drivers and Attendants by riding along on and following routes, providingguidance and instruction based on observations.
  • Develop and review safety and performance data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement. Present findings to the Director of Safety & Training as well as the impacted depot management teams.
  • Deliver first aid, CPR, OSHA, materials handling, fire safety and other training.
  • Empower employees by creating a culture that supports safe, consistent service.
  • Identify and Resolve Problems
  • Conduct or facilitate a comprehensive investigation process following vehicle collisions or employee workplace accidents, which may include an on-scene investigation.Conduct follow-up meetings with involved employees and/or witnesses. Either prepare or review reports completed by others to ensure completion and accuracy, and submit a comprehensive post-incident summary to NYCSBUS Leadership, and recommend corrective action where appropriate.
  • Conduct investigations of actual and potential hazards within our depots, shops and facilities.
  • Engage with the New York City Office of Pupil Transportation to address and resolve school bus route safety and logistical concerns.
  • Interface with school officials, support staff and paraeducators to investigate and resolve matters of concern regarding Driver or Attendant performance, and/or student conduct.
  • Keep Our Employees and Depots Compliant
  • Work in conjunction with the Safety Leadership to ensure that depots are compliant with safety standards and that employees are properly qualified to perform their jobs. Facilitate the gathering of requalification forms, answer employees questions, etc.
  • Facilitate the timely completion of random, post-accident and reasonable suspicion drug & alcohol testing.
  • Work with the facilities and fleet maintenance staff, ensure facilities and equipment are compliant with regulations, licensing and best practices for safety, licensure, emergency response and other compliance.
  • Provide Operational Support to the Depots and Bus Operations
  • Support the General Managers to ensure that daily depot operations are executed as designed, challenges are mitigated quickly and accurately, and service delivery is provided to stakeholders efficiently and consistently.
  • Work in conjunction with Safety Leadership and the depot management teams to perform other duties as assigned.
  • In rare instances, act as a bus driver to complete a route.
Qualifications
  • Eligible to work in the U.S
  • At least 5 years of experience in bus driver management and/or field supervision.Student transportation is strongly preferred.
  • At least 3 years of training bus drivers behind the wheel
  • At least 2 years of experience in safety compliance, preferably in a school bus environment
  • DMV 19-A Certification required
  • Valid NY CDL (Class B) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements or able to obtain it within 90 days.
  • Bilingual: Spanish, or French or Haitian Creole highly valued
  • High School diploma or equivalent. A degree from an accredited university is preferred.
  • Training and/or certification in Reasonable Suspicion is required.
  • Training and/or certification in CPR and First Aid is strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional knowledge of bus driving safety standards, laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to pupil transportation.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of pupil transportation planning, scheduling and route development.
  • Workingknowledge of New York State and New York City Departments of Education’s rules and regulations, local policies, procedures, and expectations is helpful.
  • Ability to provide driving staff with quality in-house professional development opportunities to increase proficiency in their fields of expertise.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and use sound judgment, including appropriate handling of confidential matters.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with other professionals in a team setting.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information at all times. Must understand and act under the guidelines of FERPA regarding student privacy laws, as well as employee confidentiality.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good observation skills related to commercial motor vehicle driving techniques, as well as the ability to monitor and correct driver behavior effectively.
  • Proficient English language verbal and written communication skills. Bilingual language skills – especially Spanish, French, and/or Haitian Creole – are strongly preferred.
  • Must be willing to work at any NYCSBUS depot based on the operational and staffing needs of the company.
Physical Requirements
  • Regularly stand, walk, stoop, kneel, and climb steps.
  • Lift, carry, push or pull medium weights, up to 25 pounds.
  • Observe and communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing to observe students and NYCSBUS employees, equipment and surrounding driving conditions.
  • Frequent exposure to non-climate controlled and outside weather conditions that can be cold, hot, rainy and/or snowy
  • Work safely in conditions where noise, moving machinery, exposure to dust, fumes and/ou gas may be present.
  • During busy seasons such as the opening of the fall and summer school season, may be required to work longer than normally scheduled hours.
