Job description

Responsibilities
  • Assist in controlling hazardous working conditions and unsafe employee activities through interface with project management/supervisory personnel.
  • Assist in supervision and administration of safety/first aid and rescue squad activities.
  • Assume total responsibility for safety operations during shift work assignments.
  • Participate in developing and conducting employee orientation training, task‑specific training, ongoing supervisor training, and assist in training project managers on safety.
  • Conduct work‑area surveillance inspections, air‑sampling tests for confined‑space entry, property damage, and personal injury investigations.
  • Document all accidents, safety violations, and unsafe conditions/activities.
  • Issue confined‑area entry and hot‑work permits as required.
  • Accompany safety, health, and insurance inspections on walk‑through tours as required.
  • Review safety‑related journals, catalogues, and other reference materials to stay abreast of changes in protective safety equipment, materials, and gear.
  • Assist in preparing written appeals for safety violation citations.
  • Input and retrieve data from Industry Safe management software.
  • Work as an active member of the overall project safety team and collaborate with other safety professionals to create an exceptional safety experience for the entire project.
  • Lead training sessions specific to the project.
  • Develop, implement, evaluate, and maintain site‑specific safety plans.
  • Coordinate safety‑badging and substance‑abuse screening.
  • Deliver safety orientations and provide guidance and expertise for mechanical contracting safety.
  • Conduct specific training regarding mechanical contracting safety for project personnel.
  • Actively participate in site safety audits and assessments.
  • Issue, review, and close out hot‑work permits, dig permits, and pre‑task planning safety cards.
  • Participate in project meetings including toolbox talks, subcontractor meetings, site safety committees, plan‑of‑the‑day meetings, and foreman meetings.
  • Walk and assess the project throughout each day; spot‑check pre‑task plans, hot work, and dig permits.
  • Participate in worker‑to‑worker observation exercises.
  • Provide timely incident‑analysis reports for serious near‑misses, injuries, and property‑damage incidents.
  • Actively support and participate in injury‑case management, developing and enforcing a return‑to‑work/restricted‑duty program.
  • Participate in the site emergency response and crisis‑management plans.
  • Participate in mock drills.
  • Lead the daily stretch‑and‑bend program and ensure workers are ready for work each day.
  • Help develop proactive recognition and reward systems.
  • Provide monthly statistical reports—including recordable incident rate, days away/restricted or transferred, near‑miss reporting, hazard recognition reporting—and leading‑indicator reports such as training completion percentages, audit/assessment counts, craft worker‑to‑worker observation counts, and hazard recognition submissions.
  • Coordinate safety supplies and equipment orders, restock, and maintain inventory storage areas in accordance with fieldwork procedures and company standards.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction, safety, or a related field preferred.
  • 4+ years of construction/industrial occupational health and safety experience.
  • 4+ years of experience using Microsoft Office.
  • Proficient understanding of OSHA standards and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of equipment and tools—including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
