Job description

Bay Cove Human Services' mission is to partner with people to overcome challenges and realize personal potential. Bay Cove pursues this mission by providing individualized and compassionate services to people facing challenges such as developmental disabilities, mental illness, substance use disorders, and homelessness at over 175 program sites throughout Greater Boston and Southeastern Massachusetts.


Job Summary: The Safety Specialist promotes health, wellness, and safety in our low-threshold services for adults with histories of homelessness, many impacted by substance use, mental health challenges, and complex health conditions. This role supports Bay Cove's mission by working proactively and professionally on behalf of persons served, staff, and community stakeholders. The Safety Specialist helps create a welcoming, inclusive environment in our permanent housing programs, reflecting a commitment to health, racial, and housing equity.


By providing respectful and responsive supports and collaborating with all stakeholders, this staff member implements harm reduction and trauma-informed supports for marginalized and stigmatized individuals. The Safety Specialist offers practical assistance in a calm, positive, and respectful manner, contributing to a safe, affordable, and supportive living environment. They serve as a community diplomat and represent Bay Cove as a good neighbor and responsive community partner.


This is a non-exempt position.


Essential Functions of Position:

  • Welcomes and logs in all guests, visitors, and community partners.
  • Reinforces expectations and policies for tenants and guests to support safety and benefit for all. Ensures Narcan is administered in overdose cases and waits with the individual until First Responders arrive. Monitors cameras from the front desk to support tenant needs. Checks that health and safety systems (security cameras, AED, door alarms, smoke detectors, First Aid kits, CPR masks, Narcan, fentanyl test strips, etc.) are operational.
  • Intervenes in crisis situations using good judgment, communication skills, de-escalation techniques, and calls emergency services as needed.
  • Demonstrates dependability and reliability.
  • Works all shifts, including weekends and holidays, as scheduled.
  • Attends all required training.
  • Communicates in real-time with Program Director and staff at the CCC.
  • Maintains privacy and confidentiality of tenants' personal and health information in accordance with laws.
  • Performs other duties as requested by the Program Director.

Requirements for the position:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for long periods.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather.
  • Ability to walk stairs and throughout the building as scheduled.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
